Josh Duhamel Embraces Off-Grid Living: Inside His Self-Built Family Retreat in the Minnesota Woods

Josh Duhamel is revealing insights into the private life he has built for himself and his family in Minnesota.
The Ransom Canyon actor, 52, discussed his off-the-grid lifestyle in the Midwest during an interview with Parade on Thursday, April 10. He shared a rare look at his life away from Hollywood and elaborated on his desire to embrace a quieter existence.
“Part of the reason I built my place out in Minnesota, deep in the woods, is it’s removed from everything,” he explained.
“The closest store is 40 miles away. Once we get there, it’s really about everybody taking care of each other—making memories, spending time with family and friends,” said Duhamel, who has a one-year-old son, Shepherd, with his wife Audra Mari, as well as an 11-year-old son, Axl, with ex-wife Fergie.
The Transformers star believes that his home away from home allows him to enjoy a simpler life, while also fostering a stronger sense of community.
“You really get a chance to get back to the basics,” he continued. “You’re not consumed by all these other distractions. When you’re out there, it’s really about having fun, making sure everybody’s warm, and that everyone has food and water.”
Duhamel dedicated 15 years to transforming his plot of land in Minnesota into the ultimate escape. He shared that he even had to wash dishes in the nearby lake before his cabin was fully equipped with amenities.
Of his cabin and off-the-grid lifestyle, he added, “It really got me back in touch. There’s something about it that fulfills the soul in many ways.”
The actor is no stranger to the great outdoors, having been born and raised in North Dakota, where he enjoyed horseback riding. Now, he finds peace working on his tractor in Minnesota.
“I’m always out there doing something, dillydallying,” he said of his land. “It’s like a big playground.”
While he has relished transforming it into a sanctuary for himself, he also finds joy in knowing that his sons will create lasting memories there.
“My son is going to have memories of this place forever. He’s not on his iPad when he’s out there,” he shared, referring to Axl. “He’s out there in the boat with me, or he’s playing soccer on the beach, or he’s out there in the woods doing whatever I’m doing.”
“And then I have a little baby who’s going to experience the same thing. Someday, I hope to pass this on to them so they can share it with their kids. It’s really important to me that they have this. It’s not just about having all the amenities and luxuries we become so accustomed to. It’s really about family. It’s about legacy,” he concluded.
