Benicio del Toro Stars as a Grizzled Arms Dealer in the Intriguing Trailer for Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’
Benicio del Toro portrays a bloodied and black-eyed arms dealer who has survived six plane crashes. He oversees his nine sons while preparing to pass the family empire to his one daughter, Liesl, a nun armed with a knife, played by Mia Threapleton. This intriguing storyline unfolds in the trailer for Wes Anderson’s *The Phoenician Scheme*, which was released on Monday.
“Today, tonight and tomorrow, we rendezvous with every titan and pretend we agree with what we already agreed. But, in fact, we don’t. We can’t,” Zsa-zsa Korda (del Toro) declares at one point in the teaser for this espionage black comedy. His mission is to secure the future of his family business while mending his relationship with his estranged daughter.
Other cast members include Michael Cera as tutor Bjorn Lund, alongside Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, and Bryan Cranston, who all partake in a competitive three-point basketball shot contest. Anderson is known for collaborating repeatedly with the same cast and crew, a practice he continues with this latest feature filmed in Germany.
Focus Features has scheduled an initial release for *The Phoenician Scheme* on May 30, followed by a wider release on June 6. Anderson wrote the script for his 13th feature based on a story he developed with Roman Coppola. The film is produced by Indian Paintbrush, marking their third collaboration with Anderson, who previously partnered with them and Focus on *Asteroid City* (2023) and *Moonrise Kingdom* (2012).
Anderson produced the film through his American Empirical Pictures banner, with Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush also serving as a producer, alongside Jeremy Dawson and John Peet.
