The Minecraft Movie Takes the Spotlight: Is a Roblox Film on the Horizon?

Minecraft has exceeded expectations at the box office, and if anyone in Hollywood is paying attention, the phones at Roblox should be ringing off the hook.
For kids aged six to 13, Minecraft and Roblox are often seen as interchangeable multiplayer block-building games. With Minecraft’s diamond pickaxe striking gold at the box office, a big-screen adaptation of Roblox seems inevitable.
Before the Minecraft enthusiasts come for us, let’s clarify: Minecraft is known for its complexity, creativity, and unique style, while Roblox focuses more on social interaction, developer-friendly features, and mini-games. Interestingly, the average age of a Minecraft player is 24, while 61 percent of Roblox users are 13 or older.
So far, A Minecraft Movie has grossed over $185 million domestically in just six days, significantly exceeding expectations and outpacing the recent hit adaptation of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This success is a clear win for studio/distributor Warner Bros. and Legendary, which produced the film and holds a 25 percent stake. Additionally, Microsoft, which acquired the IP through its $2.5 billion purchase of Mojang Studios in 2014, also benefits from this triumph.
As for Roblox, it retains ownership of its IP as a publicly traded company, and investors would likely appreciate a share of the financial success that Minecraft is enjoying.
Roblox Corporation (RBLX on the NYSE) has “sole ownership” over its “name, logo, trademarks, and certain avatar formats for off-platform commercial projects,” a spokesperson confirmed.
When asked about the potential for a Roblox movie following the success of A Minecraft Movie, the spokesperson stated, “We don’t have plans to share at this time about how we might use our IP in the future.”
Of course, creating a Hollywood feature film involves more complexity than simply waking up and deciding to do so. The lack of current plans does not necessarily mean that there are no plans in motion. A source close to Roblox shared that the company would “welcome” a film based on IP from other popular games like Dress to Impress or Adopt Me. While THR attempted to reach out to the creators of these games, no response was received.
Roblox has dipped its toes into adaptations already through creator IP on its platform, although nothing compares to the scale of Minecraft’s success. For instance, Roblox creator MiniToon’s “Piggy” character has inspired a book series, Gamefam’s Twilight Daycare animated series premiered its episodes within Roblox, and Twin Atlas’ Creatures of Sonaria has an episodic series in development.
Roblox shareholders are certainly watching the early success of A Minecraft Movie closely, but the stock market has been volatile due to recent events, including threatened tariffs. The timing of these market fluctuations coincided with the release of A Minecraft Movie, but there has been some recovery following a temporary halt on those tariffs, excluding China, which is a significant player in both gaming and the international box office.
Roblox itself has been thriving financially, generating $3.6 billion in revenue in 2024 despite being a free-to-play game. By the final quarter of 2024, the platform boasted over 85 million daily active users and nearly 19 million monthly unique users since its launch in 2006.
Minecraft, which was released in alpha in 2009 and broadly in 2011, stands as the best-selling video game of all time with over 300 million copies sold. Its revenue largely comes from upfront game sales, although it also features a marketplace for purchasable upgrades, including character skins from the film. These purchases contribute significantly to its overall earnings.
“The Minecraft Marketplace has generated hundreds of millions in revenue from nearly three billion downloads of skins, worlds, and other experiences,” a spokesperson stated.
While the spokesperson refrained from detailing Microsoft’s financial arrangements with Warner Bros. and Legendary regarding A Minecraft Movie, they did express excitement about the film’s reception, stating, “We have nothing more to share at this time” regarding potential sequels.
Will a Roblox Movie beat A Minecraft Movie 2 to market? Only time will tell.
We don’t expect a Roblox film to be greenlit immediately, as these projects require extensive development. However, the clock is ticking. The success of the Barbie movie, which has garnered nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, has already led to adaptations of Masters of the Universe and Matchbox, among others.
