Hollywood has a long-standing fascination with telling stories about itself.

This is exemplified by Apple TV+’s new series, ‘The Studio,’ which has garnered positive reviews and features Seth Rogen as a troubled and anxious film executive.

However, Rogen isn’t the only well-known actor to take on the role of a studio executive on screen.

Over the years, many actors such as Tom Cruise, Tim Robbins, Tilda Swinton, Jeremy Piven, Tom Hanks, Rashida Jones, and Rob Reiner have portrayed Hollywood executives, each bringing their unique flair to the role.

Here’s a look at some of the most memorable portrayals of studio executives in both film and television.

Adaptation (2002)

Nicolas Cage embodies a real-life version of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman in this film directed by Spike Jonze. Cage also plays Charlie’s twin brother, Donald. Charlie is hired by studio executive Valerie Thomas, portrayed by Tilda Swinton, who is a fan of Kaufman’s previous work, to adapt Susan Orlean’s bestselling book, ‘The Orchid Thief.’ However, Charlie finds himself struggling with writer’s block. Swinton and her fellow cast members received a SAG Award nomination for their performance.

Babylon (2022)

Damien Chazelle’s film features a stellar ensemble cast that explores the transition from silent films to sound in late 1920s Hollywood. Jeff Garlin plays Don Wallach, the head of Kinoscope Studios, while Diego Calva portrays Manny Torres, a Kinoscope employee with aspirations of stardom. After a series of events, Manny is offered an executive position at the studio, but soon realizes that the role may not align with his expectations.

Curb Your Enthusiasm (1999-2024)

In the eleventh season of this HBO comedy, which aired in 2021, Larry (Larry David) and his manager Jeff (Jeff Garlin) successfully pitch a new show titled ‘Young Larry’ to Netflix. The show revolves around Larry as a young man trying to kill his wealthy uncle for inheritance while pursuing his stand-up career. Reid Scott plays the fictional Netflix executive, Don Winston Jr., who gives the green light to the project.

Entourage (2004-15)

Constance Zimmer starred as Dana Gordon, a studio executive in the HBO series that aired from 2004 to 2011. Dana also engages in a romantic relationship with the ambitious agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Other notable studio executives throughout the series include Carla Gugino and Alan Dale. The 2015 film continuation picks up right after the series finale, revealing that Ari has accepted the role of CEO at Time Warner and wants his former client Vince (Adrian Grenier) to lead his first studio film.

Hail, Caesar! (2016)

The Coen brothers’ film features Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), a movie executive known for managing scandals in Hollywood. When Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), the star of Mannix’s film ‘Hail, Caesar! A Tale of the Christ,’ is kidnapped, Mannix must act swiftly to resolve the crisis. Brolin’s performance earned him a nomination for the MovieGuide Awards’ Grace Award.

Hollywood (2020)

In this limited series created by Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy, Rob Reiner plays Ace Amberg, the head of Ace Studios. Ace greenlights a film initially titled ‘Peg,’ later renamed ‘Meg,’ which features his daughter Claire (Samara Weaving). Following a heart attack, Ace’s wife Avis (Patti LuPone) takes over the studio.

The Muppets (2011)

In this charming film, the Muppets, with the help of Walter (Jason Segel), seek to raise money to save their theater. They plan a telethon and pitch several networks, including the fictional CDE. Executive Veronica Martin (Rashida Jones) agrees to air the show if they can secure a celebrity host, leading to the humorous kidnapping of Jack Black.

Network (1976)

William Holden plays Max Schumacher, a network executive overseeing the UBS Evening News at the fictional Union Broadcasting System. The plot kicks off when Max informs veteran anchor Howard Beale (Peter Finch) that he will lose his job due to poor ratings, leading to Beale’s iconic on-air outburst.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

While not a studio executive, Al Pacino’s character Marvin Schwarz serves as the influential agent to actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) in this Quentin Tarantino film. Pacino’s impactful dialogue in the early scenes leads Rick to reevaluate his career choices. The ensemble cast, including Pacino, received a SAG Award for their performances.

The Player (1992)

In this satire directed by Robert Altman, Tim Robbins stars as Griffin Mill, a studio executive who begins receiving death threats from a disgruntled screenwriter. As he grapples with his potential replacement by a rising executive, the film offers a revealing look at the inner workings of Hollywood.

Saving Mr. Banks (2013)

Tom Hanks portrays Walt Disney in this film that chronicles his negotiations with ‘Mary Poppins’ author P. L. Travers (Emma Thompson) for the film rights. Swimming With Sharks (1994)

Kevin Spacey plays Buddy Ackerman, a notorious Hollywood producer. When Guy (Frank Whaley) lands a job as his assistant, he believes he has hit the jackpot, only to discover Buddy’s abusive nature. This leads Guy to seek revenge, revealing the dark side of ambition in Hollywood.

Tropic Thunder (2008)

In a transformative role, Tom Cruise portrays studio executive Les Grossman, known for his explosive temper and crude remarks. His character’s demanding nature complicates the production of a Vietnam War movie, leading to a chaotic situation in the jungle. Cruise’s performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

This film features two studio executives, R.K. Maroon (Alan Tilvern) and Marvin Acme (Stubby Kaye), whose fates spark the film’s mystery. As toon character Roger Rabbit (voiced by Charles Fleischer) seeks to clear his name after being framed for murder, private investigator Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) reluctantly helps him uncover the truth.
