Anjelica Huston Opens Up About Her Experience on ‘Smash’: “I Didn’t Feel Valued in That Role”

Anjelica Huston may have starred in the NBC musical series Smash, but she candidly admits that her experience on the show was not a happy one.
In a recent interview, the actress reflected on her time alongside Katherine McPhee, Megan Hilty, Debra Messing, and Jack Davenport in the television drama. Huston portrayed Broadway producer Eileen Rand for the series’ two seasons before it was canceled in 2013.
“I wasn’t very happy when I was on that show,” Huston shared. “I was living in New York, and for obvious reasons, I didn’t feel very content there. It was a cold winter, and I didn’t feel valued in that role. I was a bit depressed about it. It was tough; I didn’t really enjoy making it.”
During this period, Huston was also dealing with the grief of losing her husband of 16 years, Robert Graham, who passed away in 2008. “Bob was very special and irreplaceable,” she reflected. “A lot has happened since Bob died.”
Huston’s remarks come as a Broadway adaptation of the show opened Thursday night. Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron, and Steven Spielberg are the lead producers, with Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony Award winner for The Producers, directing.
The Broadway cast features Robyn Hurder, Brooks Ashmanskas, Krysta Rodriguez, John Behlmann, Kristine Nielsen, Caroline Bowman, Jacqueline B. Arnold, Bella Coppola, and Casey Garvin. The score, composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, includes many songs from the television series, such as “Let Me Be Your Star” and “Don’t Forget Me,” along with new material. Joshua Bergasse, who choreographed the TV series, returns as the choreographer for the stage version.
The Broadway production has been in the works for some time, with Greenblatt and other team members initially discussing a larger stage adaptation following a one-night charity benefit concert version of Bombshell in 2015. Although it was originally slated for Broadway in 2020, the project faced delays, and the team conducted a developmental workshop last summer.
The series focuses on the impending opening night for Bombshell, a new show about Marilyn Monroe. The synopsis for the Broadway show describes a legendary Broadway star, Ivy Lynn, who nearly cracks under the pressure, leading to a series of humorous setbacks and surprises that bring a diva director, a bewildered producer, two exasperated authors, one eager understudy, and the entire company to their breaking point. However, the curtain is set to rise, no matter the challenges.
