Elizabeth Chambers Opens Up About Heartbreak in Exclusive Trailer for ID’s ‘Toxic’ Featuring Armie Hammer’s Past

Elizabeth Chambers, the ex-wife of Armie Hammer, is determined to delve into the complexities of traumatic relationships, including her own, in the trailer for Investigation Discovery’s upcoming docuseries, *Toxic*.

“At the heart of toxic relationships, no one is immune,” the former Current TV anchor reveals in the teaser for the documentary series, set to air and stream on Max starting May 5. This six-part series follows Chambers as she examines the dark and troubling aspects of relationships. “Navigating through my own heartbreak took me back to my roots as an investigative journalist,” she shares.

In *Toxic*, Chambers engages with survivors of harmful relationships, highlighting the lasting trauma often inflicted by unhealthy partnerships. As the owner of the Texas-based Bird Bakery chain, Chambers has her own profound experience with trauma. After filing for divorce from Hammer in July 2020 following a decade of marriage, she was confronted with shocking allegations about the Hollywood actor’s sexual behavior that emerged in the public eye. Reflecting on the situation, Chambers expressed, “I was learning things as the public was… I was like, ‘There are no words. What the heck?’”

The shock of the allegations against her ex-husband was also evident in a 2021 Instagram post, where she wrote: “For weeks, I’ve been trying to process everything that has transpired. I am shocked, heartbroken, and devastated. Heartbreak aside, I am listening and will continue to listen and educate myself on these delicate matters. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know.”

Post-divorce, Chambers channels her investigative skills into the docuseries, aiming to unravel the enigma of dysfunctional relationships and their frequent ties to violence, manipulation, and deceit. “What I want to do is dive deeply into the intentions, dive deeply into the patterns,” she notes in the *Toxic* trailer.

In the first episode, Chambers speaks with Kelly Sutliff about her fairy-tale romance that turned into a nightmare. Subsequent episodes feature a woman who was imprisoned after being framed by her ex-fiancé, a U.S. Marshall; a family seeking justice after a young woman died following a routine dental visit; and the story of a military wife in an abusive relationship with an ex-soldier who shot her and her father in front of their 4-year-old son.

The series culminates in episodes where Chambers investigates Anthony Strangis, a convicted conman, unveiling new victims and the trauma they have faced. Produced by Breaklight Pictures, *Toxic* aligns with ID’s annual No Excuse for Abuse campaign, dedicated to raising awareness about domestic and intimate partner violence.

“At ID, we are deeply committed to raising awareness and fostering dialogue around unhealthy relationship dynamics and intimate partner violence. With *Toxic*, we aim to empower the voices of survivors and facilitate meaningful conversations, ensuring that our No Excuse for Abuse initiative remains a year-round focus, not just in October. We are incredibly grateful for Elizabeth’s partnership on this series; her passion, empathy, and care have created a safe space for survivors to share their stories,” said Jason Sarlanis, president of ID.

The No Excuse for Abuse campaign coincided with another docuseries, *Chris Brown: A History of Violence*, which featured Sunny Hostin leading a discussion with experts and advocates on intimate partner violence.

Meanwhile, four years after allegations of sexual assault and cannibalism against him severely impacted his career, Hammer is gradually returning to the film industry. The star of *Call Me by Your Name* and *The Social Network* has resumed work on recent low-budget independent projects, including *Frontier Crucible*, *Bone Tomahawk*, and *The Dark Knight*.
