Platform game Astro Bot emerged as the standout winner at the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards, held in London on Tuesday evening, securing five awards, including the coveted title of Best Game. The psychological horror title Still Wakes the Deep also performed well, taking home three BAFTAs, two of which were for performance.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II led the nominations with 11, followed closely by Astro Bot and Still Wakes the Deep, each receiving six nominations. Other notable contenders included Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, LEGO Horizon Adventures, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. All nominated games were released between November 25, 2023, and November 15, 2024.
During the ceremony, Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh presented the award for Best Performer in a Leading Role to Alec Newman for his portrayal of Cameron McLeary in Still Wakes the Deep.
Japanese composer Yoko Shimomura was honored with the BAFTA Fellowship for her significant contributions to the gaming industry. Her work includes numerous iconic soundtracks enjoyed by millions, such as those from the Kingdom Hearts series, Final Fantasy XV, and the Mario & Luigi games, as recognized by the British Academy.
The performing arts and entertainment trade union Equity used the occasion to urge gaming industry leaders to enhance pay and working conditions for performers. John Barclay, Equity’s assistant general secretary for recorded media, emphasized the need for industry leaders to address ongoing poor practices reported by Equity members. He highlighted the video game industry’s substantial worth of over £7 billion in the U.K. and called for union-negotiated agreements to improve pay and conditions, similar to practices in the U.S.
Last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 dominated the BAFTAs with five awards, while Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Viewfinder, and Alan Wake 2 each received two honors.
BAFTA and Digital Cinema Media recently initiated a national cinema advertising campaign aimed at celebrating the art of storytelling in video games. The campaign features Susan Wokoma alongside Baldur’s Gate 3 actors Samantha Béart and Neil Newbon, as well as Doug Cockle from Witcher 3, in a trailer directed by Jennifer Sheridan.
