Best Dressed Stars at the 2025 Met Gala: Pharrell Williams, Kerry Washington, Anne Hathaway, More

Brooch sales should skyrocket among anyone who paid attention to Monday’s Met Gala red carpet — without a doubt the night’s key accessory, brooches adorned every jacket lapel and closed the collar of many a button-down shirt. Other stars got a little more creative, like Lewis Hamilton, who affixed a Briony Raymond brooch to his beret, or Zendaya, who went rogue and placed a Bulgari Serpenti brooch on the back of her Louis Vuitton suit jacket.
Jewelers should be thrilled in general with their presence on the 2025 Met Gala carpet, as they played perfectly into the night’s key dressing theme of dandyism, embraced with equal verve by men and women. This year’s Met Gala is raising funds for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute while also celebrating Saturday’s opening of its latest exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This focus on showcasing Black identity via the dandies who have influenced culture as far back as the 19th century inspired Met Gala guests in multifarious ways, but sparkle and an accent on custom designs ruled the night.
Black and white, meanwhile, was the evening’s dominant color palette, with accents of red that added either subtle detail or was employed for fun, look-at-me shock value. A splash of sky blue also played a role, from Anna Wintour’s full-length satin coat over a pale silver gown, designed by Williams as a reinterpretation of a Virgil Abloh Louis Vuitton design from 2020, then paired with an oversized heart brooch that was a gift to Wintour from the late Karl Lagerfeld. Wintour’s look was bookended nicely when Lupita Nyong’o arrived later on the carpet in an aquamarine Chanel suit in lurex wool and satin.
The Costume Institute exhibition always inspires the Met Gala’s dress code, and this year’s announced theme of “Tailored for You” created a vast range of interpretations. Here’s a look at a handful of A-list stars who understood and embraced the assignment.
Colman Domingo in custom Valentino
Nominated for back-to-back Academy Awards for Rustin and Sing Sing, Colman Domingo has done more for the male peacock trend and dandy style than any other actor in Hollywood. That made him a natural choice as a co-chair for Monday’s Met Gala, and once again, he did not disappoint, appearing in a grand blue cape inspired by a church choir robe, and accented with a diamond and crystal high-jewelry necklace by Boucheron. Domingo wore the robe only for his entrance, however, handing it off to reveal a custom Valentino look inspired by 1940s zoot suits. A close look at the jacket revealed that it was edged in pearls, while Boucheron rings and an earring finished his look.
Pharrell Williams in Louis Vuitton
Williams — who since 2023 has been the men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton, which is also the primary sponsor of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” — fittingly designed a look for himself that put an emphasis on handcraft and tailoring. His double-breasted jacket is fully embellished with pearls to create a pinstripe effect, which Williams said on the carpet was “really about the details and the dandyism.” He finished his look with Tiffany & Co.’s “Coronation” ring in 18-karat gold and yellow diamonds, including a center stone that weighed more than 20 carats.
Kerry Washington in Jonathan Simkhai
There’s a bit of a Dior New Look vibe about Jonathan Simkhai’s custom look for Kerry Washington, with its sheer A-line skirt topped by what at first glance looks like a tailored jacket. Yet it also tweaked the notion of menswear influences with a modern take on an ivory tuxedo jacket that also featured a fully open back. That latter detail was perfect for showcasing a Chopard necklace draped down Washington’s back, paired with Chopard diamond earrings and rings.
Sadie Sink in Prada
Amid the night’s focus on tailoring, Sadie Sink looked ethereal in a Prada gown crafted of black tec satin and a cape of delicate Chantilly lace around her shoulders. The Stranger Things star finished her look with Prada shoes and evening bag, and Chopard pearl and diamond jewels.
Lala Anthony in Off-White
Among the earlier arrivals, La La Anthony immediately set the tone for the evening’s masculine-meets-feminine vibe, wearing a structured tulle gown over a black bustier and black tailored tuxedo pants. The look is a recreation of a 2020 design by Virgil Abloh for his Fall/Winter 2020 Off-White collection. Anthony paired the look with Jimmy Choo shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.
Zoe Saldaña in Thom Browne
The precision Thom Browne applies to his tailoring felt perfect for this Met Gala theme, and not only on Zoe Saldaña (more on that in a moment). The Oscar winner’s black-and-white tuxedo gown required 10,000 hours of handwork and 2.7 million white bugle beads to cover every seam, while her sleeves and black plissé bodice were covered with bridal buttons, and in back, an oversized bow cascaded from Saldaña’s neck. She finished the look with earrings and a ring by Buccellati.
Sarah Snook in anOnlyChild
The former Succession star is roundly agreed to be the favorite for a Tony Award, playing all 26 roles in The Picture of Dorian Gray, now on Broadway. The Oscar Wilde novel upon which it’s based takes place during the Victorian era, and Snook beautifully exudes the dark romance of that story. Her look by anOnlyChild starts with a custom tailored black satin coat lined in red and featuring exaggerated peak lapels and a gathered back, then paired with a white silk gazar shirt and satin tuxedo pant. Snook finishes the outfit with a variety of jewels, including brooches by Rahaminov Diamonds and Saidian Vintage Jewels.
Gigi Hadid in Miu Miu
Several guests opted for a 1940s influence in their ensembles, but few with more élan than Gigi Hadid, who from head to toe looked inspired by that decade. Her gold velvet gown with front draping by Miu Miu felt straight out of a film noir, enhanced by the “victory rolls” in her hair, a popular World War II-era hairstyle. Hadid finished her look with jewels by De Beers.
Anne Hathaway in Carolina Herrera
Perhaps the ultimate New York Black dandy, the late André Leon Talley was on many minds Monday evening, and that includes Anne Hathaway, who worked with Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon on a look they felt Talley would love. That started with the signature item of the Herrera oeuvre, the crisp white shirt, paired with a column skirt crafted of contrasting black and white crystal embroidery. In the press notes, Gordon’s team included a Talley quote: “It is a moral code to dress well. Whatever your budget — you can wear a white shirt … and be well dressed.” Hathaway finished her look in Bulgari high jewelry, including the Cosmic Vault Necklace, which showcases a 123.35-carat sugarloaf sapphire.
Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel
Chanel is a house that was founded on employing menswear influences to free women from the corsets of the early 20th century, and that idea was put on steroids in the looks created by the label for stars that included Dua Lipa, Blackpink’s Jennie, and Lupita Nyong’o, who chose a head-to-toe look that included a custom aquamarine lurex wool jacket embellished with a satin collar, paired with matching pants and an aquamarine satin blouse with satin bow, then finished with an aquamarine chiffon cape. The look was inspired by a Karl Lagerfeld design from the house’s Fall/Winter 2015-16 haute-couture collection. Diamond high jewelry, an oversized camellia brooch, hat and shoes, also by Chanel, completed Nyong’o’s look.
A$AP Rocky in AWGE
He founded AWGE as a creative agency and record label in 2014, and a decade later he added an eponymous fashion line to the mix, debuting his first collection in Paris in June 2024. The chocolate-hued suit A$AP Rocky wore on the Met Gala carpet takes its cues from those designs, with a focus on tailoring that included the trench styling of his coat. The Harlem-born rapper maximized his dandy style via his accessories, which included a customized Briony Raymond umbrella embellished with more than 90 carats of diamonds, a one-of-a-kind pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses accented with natural diamonds and gemstones, a variety of Bulgari high jewelry, including a brooch in rose gold and set with diamonds, rubellites and a 15.34-carat peridot, and Christian Louboutin shoes created for that 2024 AWGE show.
Laura Harrier in Gap Studio
Zac Posen continues to prove that he can imbue Gap Studio designs with couture-level details, and for the Met Gala, the creative director once again elevated the brand for actress Laura Harrier, while also paying tribute to the evening’s theme. A combination of natural denim, double-face duchess silk satin and cotton organdie, the tuxedo-influenced design paired wide-legged, elongated pants with a fitted vest and voluminous sheer sleeves. “Dandyism was both a form of rebellion and a uniform of entry,” Posen said in a statement. “I wanted to honor that dichotomy by applying a sculptural technique to tailoring—treating a pant look with the reverence I typically reserve for a gown.” Harrier paired the look with jewels by Buccellati.
Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga
Debuting a new pixie cut, Nicole Kidman’s only nod to the evening’s theme seemed to be the black hue of her gown, which nonetheless was a stunner on the carpet. A custom reinterpretation of a 1952 Cristobal Balenciaga design, Kidman’s silk organza corset gown featured multiple layers of petticoats, which were sculpted by the satin bow belts at her waist and hips. Kidman’s look was finished with emerald and diamond high jewelry by Cindy Chao, as well as wrist gloves and ankle-strap pumps also by Balenciaga.
Ayo Edebiri in Ferragamo
Among the carpet’s most forward-thinking style stars, The Bear co-star Ayo Edebiri exuded notions of a modern dandy in Ferragamo by Maximilian Davis, starting with her tailored tailcoat in black nappa leather, worn over a silk floor-length shirt dress embellished with a beaded fringe harness in coral-toned glass. Edebiri’s look was finished with Ferragamo shoes and Cartier jewels.
Demi Moore in Thom Browne
Demi Moore continues to kill it on carpets beyond her awards-season run, as proven by the fantastic detail of her custom Thom Browne gown. The design looked wholly sculptural on first glance, but a closer inspection revealed the whimsy that Browne’s design, complete with the loop that circled around Moore’s head, was meant to resemble a necktie. The black and white striped design was crafted using more than 1.4 million individual beads and required 7,600 hours of handwork. Moore also wore Browne’s Pom Pom block-heel pumps.
Cynthia Erivo in Givenchy
On the Met Gala carpet, Cynthia Erivo said she was thrilled to sit down with Givenchy creative director Sarah Burton to conceptualize her custom look, which consisted of a corset and jacket embellished with red, black and white crystals inspired by rococo designs that felt right for dandy dressing, paired with a multilayered tulle skirt, custom platform laced boots and an embroidered satin clutch.
Tyler Perry in custom Gray
It was Tyler Perry’s first Met Gala, and he was thrilled to embrace the dandy-focused dress code, choosing a crystal-beaded silk cape over a tuxedo, both by Brandon Gray. The filmmaker accessorized his look with a Richard Mille watch, cufflinks by Jason of Beverly Hills, jewelry by Sebastian Jaramillo and Christian Louboutin shoes.
Mindy Kaling in Harbison
A hint of red and bold signature buttons were the perfect finishing touches to Mindy Kaling’s custom look by Harbison Studio, which consisted of the label’s Libra tuxedo with matching tuxedo shirt and tie and cummerbund sash with train. Sculptural gold and diamond jewels by Marco Bicego completed Kaling’s look.
