Bill Maher Says Another Trump Term Shouldn’t Be Surprising Because “When Does America Ever Turn Down Seconds?”

Bill Maher and Michael Douglas are finally discussing their thoughts on the 2024 election results, which saw Donald Trump defeat Kamala Harris.

The Real Time with Bill Maher host kicked off the latest show with his opening monologue, saying, “A lot of people are freaking out. You know what? I opened the window today, the sun was still shining, the birds were still singing, my gardener was packing for Mexico, that’s the thing.”

“I did not vote for the winner,” he continued. “We’ll see what the winners do, now that they won. Now they have reality they have to deal with, you know. We’ll see what they do, see if they live up to their word. Trump says he’s gonna deport 12 million people. How are you gonna get 12 million people back into Mexico? And today Trump said, ‘I’m way ahead of you. Why do you think I left so many holes in the wall?’”

The comedian added, “For months, Democrats have been saying, ‘How is this even close?’ And they’re right, it wasn’t. They could not conceive of a second Trump term, but they should have. When does America ever turn down seconds?”

Maher later brought in his first guest, Douglas, who expressed his disappointment at the outcome of the presidential election but also shared a positive moment he had this week amid the chaos.

“The other thing I just have to share, after Tuesday night, Wednesday morning, [I’m] just so pissed at this razor-thin race,” the Oscar winner said. “It was gonna be so close, with all these polls … and it’s a wipeout. I had no idea how that could happen. So, I go down Wednesday morning to play golf just to clear my mind. I go play nine holes, and I get a hole-in-one.”

Elsewhere during their conversation, the actor also brought up inflation and the death of the middle class, telling Maher, “The very fact now that we can talk about Republicans as being the party for the people, and we are this elitist party on the left, Democrats, is wild.”

Earlier this year, Douglas portrayed Benjamin Franklin in the Apple TV+ miniseries Franklin. He also produced and appeared in the documentary America’s Burning, which dives into the country’s economic divide.

The other guests featured on the latest episode of Real Time were John Heilemann and Sarah Isgur.
