Billie Lourd is opening up about a “magical” part of motherhood.
The actress and mom-of-two spoke exclusively to PEOPLE at the Mid-Century Modern premiere, hosted at the DGA Theater Complex in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 25. During the conversation, the Scream Queens actress, 32, shared that her 4-year-old son, Kingston Fisher, just learned how to ride a bike.
“My son just learned to ride a bike without training wheels, and he’s 4. And just watching him learn new things is the most magical, crazy thing,” Lourd says. “I didn’t learn to ride a bike ’till I was 9. I don’t know — maybe blame my parents, maybe blame something — I don’t know. He’s so good at everything he tries to do, and just watching him try new things and succeed at them and feeling proud of himself is just such a beautiful thing.”
Lourd — who says she’s “obsessed” with her kids — also shared that she is grateful to have work and family-life balance — something she doesn’t think her mother, Carrie Fisher, or grandmother, Debbie Reynolds, were always able to maintain.
“I think I’ve learned to balance my life and my work in a different way than they were able to do, and that was also a product of the times,” she explains.
She adds: “I’m really lucky that I get to bring my kids everywhere. My grandma wasn’t able to do that with my mom. And I have a really stable, amazing family life and an amazing husband.”
Lourd married longtime partner Austen Rydell in 2022 after becoming engaged in 2020. In addition to Kingston, the couple has a 2-year-old daughter, Jackson Joanne.
While speaking to PEOPLE at the recent event, Lourd also shared that while she definitely sees the “spark of performance” in both of her children, she doesn’t plan to “pressure” them toward any particular life path.
“I don’t want to put pressure on them to do anything,” she says. “But yeah, my kids are hysterical and cool and really good dancers and just awesome […] but whatever they want to do.”
Most recently on the professional front, Lourd will appear as a guest star in the Hulu multi-cam comedy Mid-Century Modern, which stars Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham. The show — which is about three gay men who decide to live together in Palm Springs during their golden years — will feature Lourd as Bomer’s character’s grown daughter.
“It’s so much fun,” the Booksmart actress says of the experience. “I want them to bring back more multi-cam ’cause it’s so invigorating to be in front of a live audience, because we don’t get to do that that much anymore.”
“I’ve done a bunch of TV and movies now, and you’re really in a vacuum, which is a fun vacuum. But it’s amazing to have that audience response,” she adds.
Mid-Century Modern is currently streaming on Hulu.
