‘Billion Dollar Spy’ Enlists Tony Goldwyn, Rufus Sewell and Justin Theroux

Billion Dollar Spy has ensnared three new actors for the Russell Crowe-led Cold War thriller. Tony Goldwyn, Rufus Sewell and Justin Theroux are the latest recruits to join a cast of the true-life story of CIA asset Adolf Tolkachev.
Crowe stars as Tolkachev, who became disillusioned with the Soviet Regime and passed thousands of pages of intelligence to the United States. His portrait still hangs at CIA headquarters as the only non-American honored there. Harry Lawtey plays Tolkachev’s CIA case handler, while other stars include Vera Farmiga and Willa Fitzgerald.
New recruit Goldwyn will play CIA case officer Burton Gerber, while Rufus Sewell portrays CIA Moscow Bureau Chief Gus Hathaway. Theroux steps into the shoes of CIA case officer Van Spencer, and Crowe’s real-life son Tennyson Crowe will play his dad’s onscreen son, Sasha Tolkachev.
Amma Asante directs from a script by Ben August and Stephen Gaghan, based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by David E. Hoffman.
Walden Media and Weed Road are behind the project, currently in production in Budapest, Hungary. Walden Media’s Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan and Cher Hawrysh are producing with Akiva Goldsman and Greg Lessans of Weed Road Pictures.
Goldwyn is repped by CAA, Untitled and Schreck Rose. Sewell is repped by CAA, Julian Belfrage Associates and Jackoway Austin. Theroux is represented by CAA, Lighthouse Management & Media and Felker Toczek. Tennyson Crowe is repped by George Freeman at Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
