Bowen Yang Says Goodbye to ‘SNL,’ Thanks Ariana Grande “for Sending Me Off in the Dreamiest Way”
Amid his exit from Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang is looking back on his seven years at Studio 8H fondly.
Yang took to Instagram Saturday morning to share a lengthy tribute to his time at Saturday Night Live. The post comes after reports on Friday that Yang, who has been a cast member since 2018, would be leaving the show following Saturday night’s Christmas episode, which features Ariana Grande as host and Cher as the musical guest.
“I loved working at SNL, and most of all, I loved the people. I was there at a time when many things in the world started to seem futile, but working at 30 Rock taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile,” he wrote in part to a carousel of photos.
“I learned about myself (bad with wigs). I learned about others (generous, vulnerable, hot). I learned that human error can be nothing but correct,” he continued. “I learned that comedy is mostly logistics and that it will usually fail until it doesn’t.”
In addition to thanking his colleagues, Yang also called out his Wicked co-star Grande. “Thank you to Ari for sending me off in the dreamiest way I could imagine.”
Yang concluded, “Thank you to Lorne [Michaels] for the job. For the standard. And for bringing everyone at work together. They all care deeply about people in the room, any room, enjoying themselves. I can’t believe I was ever included in that. The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready, but shiiiiit, I hope I am.”
The Las Culturistas podcast co-host joined the sketch comedy series as a writer in show’s 44th season. The following year, he became a featured player. And in season 47, he became part of the main cast.
Yang’s upcoming projects include Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother and Me and a voice-acting role in a new The Cat in the Hat, which stars SNL alum Bill Hader. Yang and his Las Culturistas co-host Matt Rogers are writing and starring in a new movie for Searchlight Pictures.
