“A Minecraft Movie” Soars to Success with a Stunning $163 Million U.S. Opening and $313 Million Worldwide Debut

The box office blues have been vanquished in a historic manner.

Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie, produced in collaboration with Legendary Pictures, has achieved remarkable success with a record-breaking $163 million opening in the domestic market and $150.7 million internationally, totaling a staggering $313.2 million worldwide, according to final weekend figures. Thanks to a fantastic Sunday, this figure is up by more than $12 million from the previous estimate of $157 million domestically and $144 million overseas, which had resulted in a global total of $301 million.

The film significantly surpassed expectations, marking the largest opening ever for a video game adaptation, outpacing the $146.4 million three-day launch of Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie during Easter weekend in 2023. (Notably, Mario Bros. earned $204 million in total, having opened on a Wednesday.)

A Minecraft Movie now holds the title for the biggest opening of 2025 thus far and represents the largest domestic launch since the July 2024 releases of Deadpool & Wolverine, which garnered $211 million. Additionally, it surpassed the opening of Barbie, which achieved $162 million, marking Warner’s biggest domestic opening since 2016, when Batman v Superman debuted to $166 million. The Saturday gross of $60 million stands as the highest in Warner’s history, unadjusted for inflation. Legendary contributed 25 percent toward the $150 million production budget, excluding marketing expenses.

This star-studded ensemble film arrives at a particularly opportune moment, as the 2025 box office has faced significant declines in recent weeks. Minecraft provides the necessary boost of confidence that Hollywood studios and cinema owners desperately needed, especially following disappointing performances from other films, including Disney’s Snow White.

This success is also a crucial win for Warner Bros. movie studio executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, as well as the studio as a whole. Legendary’s movie chief Mary Parent, known for her expertise with major intellectual properties, played a vital role as a credited producer and was instrumental in the decision to hire Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) as the film’s director.

“We’re absolutely overjoyed that A Minecraft Movie has been so warmly received by audiences around the world,” Abdy and De Luca expressed in a statement, extending their gratitude to everyone involved, from Hess and the cast to Legendary and Vertigo, another producing partner. They also acknowledged their marketing and distribution teams. “The decade-long journey of A Minecraft Movie to the screen was overseen with great care by WBP’s Jesse Ehrman and his team, and we are thrilled that their efforts have resulted in such a tremendous response.”

The cast features Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, and Danielle Brooks, along with Emma Myers and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. Based on the popular Mojang Studios video game, the movie tells the story of four misfits who are unexpectedly transported through a mysterious portal into a strange, cubic world that thrives on imagination. To return home, they must navigate the quirks of their new reality while embarking on a quest alongside an unlikely crafting expert, with Black portraying the iconic character Steve.

Jeff Goldstein, Warner’s global distribution chief, noted that the film resonated with audiences in both small towns and major cities. Parent, reached in London, remarked that the film’s success reflects the mission to celebrate the world of Minecraft in a joyful manner, offering a unique experience that only theaters can provide. “This game is a global phenomenon,” she stated.

Indeed, Minecraft holds the title of the best-selling video game of all time, with over 300 million copies sold and an estimated 125 million active daily players. (Microsoft acquired Mojang in 2014.)

On Saturday morning, based on Friday’s impressive haul of $58 million, insiders at Warner Bros. projected a domestic opening of $135 million, which was already a significant increase from the anticipated $60 million-plus. Some rival studios believed it could reach as high as $150 million, but the strong walk-up business pushed the final numbers even higher.

Even mediocre reviews and a B+ CinemaScore did not dampen the enthusiasm for A Minecraft Movie, as moviegoers under 18 awarded it a perfect A.

Exit polls from PostTrak revealed that teens aged 13 to 17 comprised 35 percent of the audience, with the largest demographic being those aged 18 to 24—groups known for repeat viewings. Families also made a strong showing, and males accounted for 65 to 67 percent of the audience. General audiences and parents/kids rated the movie four out of five stars on PostTrak, while kids gave it a perfect five out of five.

Internationally, A Minecraft Movie is performing well in China, where it topped the weekend box office with $14.6 million, marking the best performance of any Hollywood title this year. Legendary East is managing the film’s distribution in China.

“This was lightning in a bottle,” Goldstein remarked.

The next closest film, A Working Man, debuted at No. 2 with $7.3 million. Distributed by Amazon MGM Studios in the U.S., it has earned $27.8 million in its first ten days of release. Part two of The Chosen: Last Supper, screened by Fathom, closely followed with $7.2 million.

Snow White, now in its third weekend, ranked No. 4 with a lackluster domestic total of $6.1 million, leading to a tepid global total of $168.4 million.
