‘Buffy’ Update at Hulu Casts Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the New Slayer

“In every generation, there is a chosen one” — so says the opening narration in early episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In this generation, and Hulu’s pilot for a Buffy reboot, that chosen one is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
Armstrong has been cast in a lead role in the pilot, which will see Gellar reprise her role as Buffy Summers. Gellar, who’s also an executive producer, shared a video of her breaking the news to Armstrong on Instagram Thursday; watch it below.
“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,” Gellar said in a statement. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
Added writers and executive prodcuers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, “We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”
Hulu ordered the pilot — which it’s referring to as the “Untitled Buffyverse Pilot” — in February. The show comes from 20th Television and Searchlight TV, with the Zuckerman sisters (Poker Face, Fringe) writing and Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) attached to direct and exec produce.
While she’ll be playing a new slayer, other details on Armstrong’s role — and the show itself — are being kept quiet for now. Buffy’s final season in 2002-03 did away with the idea that only one slayer could exist at a time, bringing in a host of potential slayers as part of the show’s endgame.
Gellar may have offered up one detail in the Instagram video with Armstrong, telling her new co-star “Welcome to New Sunnydale.” The town where most of the original series took place was obliterated in the series finale, leaving a giant crater. “New Sunnydale” suggests a rebuilt city.
Armstrong played Fern, the leader of a group of kids who accidentally set off on a galactic adventure, in Skeleton Crew. Her credits also include season 10 of FX’s American Horror Story, Netflix’s Anne With an E and feature films The Tomorrow War and It: Chapter Two. She is repped by Linden Entertainment and Innovative Artist Group.
Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, Zhao and Gellar are executive producing the Buffy pilot along with Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui for Suite B and Dolly Parton for Sandollar Productions. Berman, the Kuzuis and Parton (though uncredited) were all involved in the original series.
