‘Creature Commandos’ Renewed for Second Season at Max
The first building block of the new on-screen DC Universe will get a second season.
Max has renewed its adult animated series Creature Commandos for a second season. The pickup comes midway through the show’s seven-episode first season, which premiered Dec. 5.
The series, created by DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn, is the first title to be released in the DC Universe continuity, which will continue when Superman hits movie theaters next summer. (HBO’s successful series The Penguin is under the “Elseworlds” designation at DC Studios for shows and films that aren’t part of the primary through-line). DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation produce the show, and Dean Lorey (Harley Quinn) is the showrunner.
“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem,” Gunn and DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran said in a statement. “From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”
Added Amy Gravitt, vp HBO and Max comedy programming, “Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”
Creature Commandos follows a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. The season one voice cast includes Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoe Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma and Viola Davis, who reprises her role as Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
“Thanks to the brilliant imagination of James and the talent of our amazing artists, DC fans fell in love with this new family of heroes,” said Peter Girardi, executive vp alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “We are excited to continue this wild ride with our partners at Max. You want more monsters, you’re getting more monsters.”
Gunn wrote all seven episodes of Creature Commandos and kept a hand in the show’s production even as he took on his DC Studios role and directed Superman. “Every time I dealt with Creature Commandos, it was like Christmas for me,” he told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the series debut. “Taking on a project the size of Superman is just crazy. It’s hard and stressful. But the [Creature Commandos] guys were doing such amazing work, and the cast was so incredible.”
Gunn, Safran, Lorey and WB Animation president Sam Register executive produce Creature Commandos. Rick Morales is supervising producer.
