David Canfield Joins The Hollywood Reporter as Senior Entertainment Writer

Veteran entertainment journalist David Canfield has joined The Hollywood Reporter as senior entertainment writer.
Based in Los Angeles, Canfield will bolster THR’s awards season coverage, write cover stories and celebrity profiles, report from key film festivals and help book talent for the publication’s signature Roundtable series. He arrives from Vanity Fair, where he served as a Hollywood correspondent and co-hosted the popular Little Gold Men podcast.
During his four-plus years at Vanity Fair, Canfield wrote marquee profiles of stars including Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett and Benedict Cumberbatch and delivered deeply reported features on everything from the enduring queer subtext of The Talented Mr. Ripley and Brokeback Mountain to the storied relationship between Cary Grant and Randolph Scott.
Prior to that, Canfield was movies editor at Entertainment Weekly, where he oversaw the outlet’s awards coverage. His bylines have also appeared in Vulture, Slate and IndieWire.
An L.A. Press Club finalist and GLAAD Media Award nominee, Canfield has served on juries at film festivals in San Francisco, Savannah and beyond.
“David is a first-rate journalist with a wealth of experience covering Hollywood,” said Maer Roshan, editor-in-chief of The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m thrilled to have him join our top-notch team as we continue to be the definitive voice on the awards-season race — and a destination for insightful profiles, impactful reporting and breaking industry news.”
Canfield’s hire marks the latest move in THR’s continued evolution and follows recent expansions in the magazine’s coverage of awards, politics, style and technology. The publication has earned numerous accolades in recent years, including a National Magazine Award, an L.A. Press Club honor for best website, multiple Daytime Emmy nominations for its Off Script Roundtable series, and a growing list of SoCal Journalism and Webby nods.
Canfield, who will work out of THR’s Los Angeles headquarters, starts on Sept. 29.
