‘Desperate Housewives’ Update in the Works at Disney’s Onyx Collective

Disney’s Onyx Collective is looking to put a new spin on one of the most famous locales of early 2000s TV.

Onyx is developing Wisteria Lane, a spinoff/reimagining of ABC’s 2004-12 hit Desperate Housewives. The project comes from writer/executive producer Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant, Queen of the South) and EP Kerry Washington. Should it go forward, Wisteria Lane would stream on Hulu alongside Onyx Collective’s other shows.

Like Desperate Housewives, Wisteria Lane will focus on a group of friends living on a seemingly picture-perfect cul de sac whose facade hides a boatload of secrets. Marc Cherry, who created Desperate Housewives, is not currently involved in the new project (though he has spoken about his own spinoff ideas in the past).

Desperate Housewives starred Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria and Nicollette Sheridan (who left the show after season five). The show was an immediate blockbuster for ABC when it premiered in fall 2004, propelled by a mystery surrounding why one of the five leads’ neighbors (Brenda Strong, who narrated the show) killed herself. The series ranked in the Nielsen top 10 for each of its first five seasons and was still a solid performer when it ended in 2012 after eight seasons and 180 episodes. The series won seven Emmys.

Chaidez is executive producing Wisteria Lane with Washington and Pilar Savone of Simpson Street and Stacey Sher, via her Shiny Penny banner. 20th Television, where Simpson Street is based, is the studio.

Washington and Simpson Street have an ongoing relationship with Onyx Collective. Washington is an executive producer of the brand’s legal drama Reasonable Doubt and exec produced and starred in UnPrisoned.

Deadline first reported the news.
