If Sunday night feels like “Emmys, the Sequel,” that’s understandable: In January, several months later than usual, the television industry met to present the 2023 awards, a delay necessitated by last year’s dual Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But what a difference eight months might make for the 2024 Emmys.
While longtime favorites and past winners like The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White, Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson and The Crown‘s Elizabeth Debicki are once again up for trophies, first-time nominees also expected to attend the ceremony at Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles include Ryan Gosling, nominated for his guest-hosting duties on Saturday Night Live, and Naomi Watts, earning her first Emmy nom for her role as Babe Paley in FX’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
Shogun, meanwhile, already has captured 14 trophies from its record-setting 25 Emmy nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys, awarded Sept. 7-8. During the primetime telecast, which airs on ABC, the epic period drama also will vie for outstanding drama series, while the show’s stars, Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, are likewise nominated in their respective acting categories (read the predictions from The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief TV critics here).
Other nominated style stars expected on the Emmys red carpet: The Morning Show‘s Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, Ripley‘s Andrew Scott, Palm Royale‘s Kristen Wiig, and The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri.
