Donald Trump Reacts to the Cost of Eggs in the U.S., Says ‘If Anything, the Prices Are Getting Too Low’

Donald Trump has shared his most recent thoughts on the cost of eggs in the United States.

While at the White House in Washington, D.C., on Friday, April 18, the president, 78, reacted to egg prices and the current state of the economy while speaking with press after Dr. Mehmet Oz was sworn in as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. 

Giving a shoutout to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Trump said she is doing “a great job,” before he claimed that egg prices “are down 87%, but nobody talks about that.”

“You can have all the eggs you want. We have too many eggs. In fact, if anything, the prices are getting too low. So I just want to let you know that the prices are down,” the politician continued.

According to data from the Department of Agriculture, the average wholesale price of eggs on April 19 was $3.13. The amount marked a small increase from the week prior. Eggs cost $5.90 in February, nearly a dollar more than what they cost in January, at $4.95 a dozen, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Price levels to the consumer have eased considerably from early-year highs but remain at levels not yet conducive to more than normal purchases needs,” the Department of Agriculture said in a statement.

Lowering the costs of groceries and other goods was one of Trump’s biggest 2024 campaign promises. He vowed at the time that he would “immediately bring prices down, starting on day one,” if he was elected.

But, after Trump was sworn in and the economy continued to struggle, the White House seemingly acknowledged that the president has limited control over some sources of inflation — the last spike of which was due to factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

During his April 18 meeting with the press, Trump spoke more about consumer prices across the nation.

“By the way, prices are down. Groceries are down,” he said. “Eggs, which they — you hit me so hard. I’ll never forget the first day, the first week in office, they were screaming at me about eggs.”

“I said, ‘What’s going with eggs?’ They were doubling and tripling. I said, ‘I just got here.’ They were up like double, triple, and you couldn’t get any,” he continued.

Added Trump: “They said you won’t have eggs for Easter. Well, you can have all the eggs you want.”
