Elton John and Madonna End Decades-Long Beef: ‘We Finally Buried The Hatchet’

Madonna and Elton John appear to have officially ended their notorious decades-long feud, as Madonna shared a post on her Instagram Monday declaring that the two superstars “finally buried the hatchet!!!”
“Over the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist. I didn’t understand it,” Madonna wrote. The queen of pop also emphasized the impact John had on her career, writing that “seeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life.”
“I had always felt like an outsider growing up and watching him on stage helped me to understand that it was OK to be different-to stand out- to take the road, less traveled by,” Madonna wrote. In fact, it was essential.”
The feud dates back to the early 2000s, mainly instigated by the “Rocket Man” singer. John had thrown barbs about Madonna’s James Bond theme “Die Another Day” in 2002, and By 2004, he insulted Madonna during the Q Awards over her nomination for Best Live Act. “Madonna, best live act? Fuck off,” he said at the time. “Since when has lip-syncing been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-syncs on stage in public when you pay like 75 quid to see them should be shot. Thank you very much.” In 2012, John said in an interview that Madonna looked like “a fairground stripper.”
Madonna said that she went to visit John backstage to confront him after he’d served this weekend’s Saturday Night Live musical guest alongside Brandi Carlile, and that “the first thing out of his mouth was, ‘Forgive Me’ and the wall between us fell down.”
John shared her post on his Instagram story as well, calling the backstage meeting “a healing moment.”
“Forgiveness is a powerful tool,” Madonna wrote. “Within minutes. We were hugging. Then he told me had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!!”
John’s SNL performance came just after he and Carlile released their new collaborative album Who Believes in Angels, promoting the project with a special one-night concert last month that aired on CBS Sunday. Madonna, meanwhile, confirmed back in February that she was working on Confessions 2, the follow-up to 2005’s Confessions On a Dancefloor.
