Emily Blunt Teases a Sequel to Devil Wears Prada: ‘There Is Stuff Churning Around’
Sequel talks for The Devil Wears Prada? Groundbreaking.
Emily Blunt, who played Emily the sharp-tongued assistant of Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep) in the original 2006 film, gave fans some hope that the Anne Hathaway-led comedy might have a sequel in the works.
“There (are) rumblings,” Blunt, 41, told the crowd at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Dec. 5, per The Hollywood Reporter. “There is stuff churning around. But I don’t know if I can confirm anything. But we would all be delighted.”
Though Blunt wouldn’t elaborate on the potential “rumblings,” her former Prada costar and real-life brother-in-law Stanley Tucci recently told PEOPLE that he’s game to reprise his role as the savvy Nigel.
“If it does happen, I can only say that I’ll be happy,” Tucci, 64, told PEOPLE in October. “I don’t really know. I haven’t [heard] about the plot or anything. I really haven’t.”
In July, reports came out that a Devil Wears Prada sequel was in development at Disney, nearly 20 years after the original. According to Puck News, writer Aline Brosh McKenna, who adapted Lauren Weisberger’s novel into the original film’s screenplay, is attached to the sequel project.
Producer Wendy Finerman, who worked on the original, as well as director David Frankel, are both in talks to return, according to Deadline.
Back in February, Blunt had a different take on a potential sequel, sharing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the cast is “good” without making a sequel. “Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble and it’s okay.”
As for Hathaway, 42, she joined Blunt and Streep, 75, on stage in February at the SAG Awards, where they had a mini reunion.
In April 2024, Hathaway told Extra that she “wouldn’t hold out too much hope” for a sequel after telling E! News that previous month that she didn’t “think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen.”
