Erewhon Teams With Deodorant and Body Care Brand Salt & Stone for Surprising Smoothie Collab

Erewhon has found sweet virality and success with a slew of smoothie collaborations thanks to Hailey Bieber‘s Strawberry Glaze Skin creation, Kendall Jenner‘s Peaches & Cream offering and Katy Perry‘s Orange You Glad I Love You treat. The upscale supermarket chain is back with a new collaboration, and its smoothie partner may surprise you: deodorant and body care brand Salt & Stone.

The exclusive $10 offering, available now for a limited time from Oct. 1-31, is dubbed the Salt & Serve Smoothie. Now for the big reveal with the ingredients: The smoothie features a coconut-creme soft serve-base with an olive oil drizzle and flaky sea salt. The pairing is designed to offer a taste of “Salt & Stone’s feeling of luxury while giving your body the antioxidants and nutrients it needs,” per Tuesday’s news.

Founded in Los Angeles by former professional snowboarder Nima Jalali, Salt & Stone may be known for its natural deodorants — in scents like Bergamot & Hinoki to Black Rose & Oud — but it maintains a range of products including body mist, body wash, lotion, hand cream, facial cleanser, candles and gift sets. The brand has previously done buzzy collabs with Leon Bridges, Outdoor Voices, Stüssy and Brain Dead. Jalali admits to being an early fan of Erewhon, back when the chain had only one location, and he was inspired by its success as he built out Salt & Stone. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with him to get the scoop on the new partnership, how they selected the right ingredients and his favorite smoothie.

First off, congratulations on the success of the brand. I suppose the one thing they don’t tell you when you launch a body care brand is that you might one day be doing a collaboration on something edible like a smoothie. Whose idea was this?

It’s been such an incredible journey. The collaboration with Erewhon is definitely one of those unexpected but exciting directions the brand has taken, but a natural progression from how successful that partnership has been. As Erewhon’s top body care brand, it was a natural next step to collaborate at the Tonic Bar. It’s also a pretty full circle moment for me. I’ve been going to Erewhon since way back when it was just one location. It was a huge inspiration to me when starting Salt & Stone.

Your brand has been praised for its ingredients and unique scents. How did you narrow it down to what would work best in an Erewhon smoothie?

We approached this collaboration the same way we design our body care — with a focus on ingredients that are both functional and sensorial. We created a smoothie that not only tastes amazing, but relies solely on functional ingredients that are as close to their natural state as possible, with a clean and balanced profile. Our scents are designed to transport you into the natural world, and we wanted Salt & Serve to do the same.

Being that your products are designed to “help protect, cleanse, support and recover,” what ingredients were important to have included in the smoothie to match that?

We focused on whole, nourishing ingredients that had both functional benefits but also a sensorial element to them. Salt & Serve starts with coconut as its base — it’s creamy and indulgent, but also rich in nutrients that support recovery, which is really important to me as an active person. I love extra virgin olive oil because it has so many incredible, functional benefits for the body — everything from brain to bone health. The touch of sea salt really balances everything, and for me, evokes that feeling of saltwater in the air on the PCH.

It seems like every Erewhon smoothie has flown off the shelves and gone viral. Have you tried the others? Do you have a favorite?

I’ve definitely tried a few. An Erewhon smoothie run is a daily occurrence in my house so it’s hard to pick just one. Erewhon has a way of turning wellness into something really fun and flavorful, and I think that’s why these smoothies have resonated with so many people. Each one is different, but they all share a commitment to high-quality ingredients, which I really respect. That said, I’m pretty excited about what we’ve created with the Salt & Serve smoothie. It’s got a flavor that’s a bit unexpected but still really indulgent, and I think people are going to love it.
