Garth Brooks Sexual Assault Accuser’s Lawyers Condemn Singer for Naming Rape Victim
Lawyers for a former employee who accused Garth Brooks of raping her at a Los Angeles Hotel in 2019 have slammed the country music singer for revealing her real name in a court filing.
“Garth Brooks just revealed his true self. Out of spite and to punish, he publicly named a rape victim,” lawyers for the accuser, led by Douglas H. Wigdor of Wigdor LLP, said in a statement on Wednesday. In an Oct. 3 lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the accuser, identified only as “Jane Roe,” alleged sexual assault, battery and violations of California laws providing protections from intimidation and coercion after the 2019 hotel incident.
In addition to rape, the former makeup artist and hairstylist for Brooks alleged the singer repeatedly groped and subjected her to sexually explicit comments. In a statement Brooks denied the accusations: “For the last two months, I have been hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales of what my future would be if I did not write a check for many millions of dollars,” he claimed.
But prior to the filing of the California court complaint last week, Brooks — while in settlement negotiations with the unnamed plaintiff — preemptively filed a lawsuit in federal court in Mississippi to block the accuser from suing. In that separate legal action, Brooks, who filed as a “John Doe” and described himself as a “celebrity and public figure who resides in Tennessee,” claimed that he was being extorted over his refusal to give the accuser a raise and pay for health insurance.
But in an amended reply to the Jane Roe lawsuit filed Tuesday in a separate Mississippi jury trial, Brooks and his legal team allegedly revealed the real name of the case’s Jane Roe. “With no legal justification, Brooks outed her because he thinks the laws don’t apply to him. On behalf of our client, we will be moving for maximum sanctions against him immediately,” the statement from Wigdor LLP continued.
The accuser’s legal team intends to file a motion for sanctions to compel Brooks’ legal team to revert its latest filing to Jane Roe. Besides Roe, Douglas Wigdor has represented other accusers who brought lawsuits against high-profile figures in the entertainment and music industries.
He represented Cassie Ventura in a lawsuit that sparked a federal investigation into Sean “Diddy” Combs, as well as Julia Ormond in a lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein, CAA and Disney, among several others.
