Gayle King, Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez Will Fly to Space on One of Jeff Bezos’ Rockets

Blue Origin, the rocket company owned by Jeff Bezos, has announced the crew for its upcoming mission, and it includes a number of boldface names.

Lauren Sanchez, Bezos’ fiancee, “brought the mission together,” per the space company. In addition to Sanchez, CBS Morning co-anchor Gayle King and pop superstar Katy Perry will be part of the crew.

“[Sanchez] is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come,” Blue Origin said in a statement.

The mission was announced on CBS Mornings Thursday. Blue Origin says this is the first all-female crew for one of its flights, and the 11th manned mission overall. King, however, will be the second network morning show host to fly into space on one of the rockets.

A specific date for the mission has not been set, but the company said that it will take place in the Spring.

Bezos’ company has leaned on high-profile “astronauts” for years in a bid to drive awareness of what it is doing. Bezos himself was on the first manned launch in 2021, and Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan also joined a crew later that year, with the experience featured on the show.

Still, King, Sanchez and Perry make up arguably the starriest crew yet. Others joining them will be former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, research scientist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft takes passengers above the Kármán line 62 miles above the earth. It is generally accepted as the spot where earth’s atmosphere gives way to space.
