Godzilla Comic, George Takei Graphic Memoir ‘They Called Us Enemy’ Among IDW Titles Coming to Webtoon (Exclusive)

Indie comic book powerhouse IDW Publishing is the latest publisher to embrace the power of scrolling digital comics.

IDW has partnered with Webtoon Entertainment, the media company that paved the way for the mainstream embrace of the mobile webcomic format, to bring some of the publisher’s most popular franchises to the Webtoon platform.

Reformatted webcomic versions of Godzilla: Unnatural Disasters, acclaimed serial killer story Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, and George Takei’s memoir They Called Us Enemy are the first batch of titles that will hit Webtoon starting April 25. Additional titles will be announced at a later date.

“Webtoon has become the destination for comics of all kinds, including some of the biggest franchises in entertainment,” said Yongsoo Kim, head of global Webtoon at Webtoon Entertainment. “This partnership with IDW Publishing is an exciting step in expanding our diverse library and connecting more fans with the stories they love in a whole new way.”

For IDW, which in recent years has found sales success with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and acclaim with the surprise hit of Beneath the Trees, the deal expands its reach beyond the traditional comic shop crowd.

Said IDW CEO and publisher Davidi Jonas, “We’re thrilled to work alongside such an innovative platform, and we can’t wait to see how our stories resonate with Webtoons’ global community. This collaboration is an important part of our mission to bring comics to fans in creative and accessible ways.”

Originally published in 2021, Unnatural Disasters was a three-part saga featuring Godzilla’s iconic rogues gallery, epic kaiju battles, and a thrilling adventure spanning different time periods, including a trip to the underworld.

Beneath the Trees, from filmmaker and artist Partick Horvath, took the worlds of Richard Scarry and put it through a bloody Dexter blender, telling the twisted tale of a small-town bear who lives a double life. By day, she’s the helpful hardware store owner, and by night, she’s a serial killer. The title was on THR’s list of best comics in 2024.

Enemy follows Takei, the actor who is best known for playing Sulu on the original Star Trek series, as he revisits his haunting childhood in American internment camps during World War II, tackling themes such as courage, country, loyalty, and love.

Webtoon, which began in South Korea before exploding internationally, has in recent years made collaborations with DC Comics and Archie Comics. Other partnerships have included South Korean pop groups BTS, TXT, and Enhypen, plus companies such as Ubisoft, McDonald’s, Duolingo, among others.
