Golden Globes Producers on New Podcast Category and Recreation of Awards Show on ‘The Studio’

After this year’s Golden Globes nominations were announced bright and early on Monday, executive producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner took a few minutes to discuss the upcoming telecast — and weigh in on having the show spoofed on The Studio.
The pair are serving as executive producing showrunners for the third year, which Weiss admitted that even with some experience, “I don’t know if I would ever use the word ‘easier,’ but certainly you’re walking into something that you know a little bit more what to expect. But honestly, this is a party. It’s the opening awards show of the year, and we’re just looking forward to the fun of it all.”
Nikki Glaser returns as host for the show, taking place at its longtime home of the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 11. There are a few big changes this year, though, starting with the debut of a podcast category, which Kirshner celebrated as having “some great names” nominated and Weiss added, “There are so many podcasts out there, I think it’s really appropriate, actually, to open up that category. People are getting their content and their entertainment in many different forms.”
Two of the show’s special honors, the Cecil B. DeMille Award (this year going to Helen Mirren) and the Carol Burnett Award (going to Sarah Jessica Parker) will also be presented in the first-ever “Golden Eve” primetime special, airing on Jan. 8 as part of “Golden Week,” a new weeklong lineup of kick-off events leading up to the big night.
“It’s a really great idea to just start the whole week off differently, stretch out the celebration and give [the special honorees] a little bit more of their due, because there’s more time for them now,” Weiss noted.
And among the day’s nominees — announced live from the Beverly Hilton by Marlon Wayans and Skye P. Marshall — was The Studio, which famously did an entire episode about the Golden Globes in its first season. The show went so far as to actually shoot in the Beverly Hilton and recreate the show with a number of real stars.
“Actually even watching it, I was like, ‘Were they on our set one day and we didn’t know?’ Like, what happened? Did they sneak in when we weren’t paying attention?” Kirshner admitted of how realistic the episode was. Weiss confirmed, “They did a great job.”
Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.
