Lola Young Embraces Authenticity: Celebrating Her Bold and Unfiltered Journey

Lola Young may exude a “no fucks given” attitude, but she genuinely cares deeply about her craft and her fans.

The 24-year-old British singer-songwriter, who celebrated her first No. 1 hit with the song “Messy,” is enthusiastic about this exciting chapter in her career while eagerly anticipating what lies ahead. “I’m so gassed to be where I’m at, but I’m just so looking forward to making more music and getting it straight out of there now,” she shares, expressing pride in the new music she’s currently creating.

Now, she is set to take the stage for one of her biggest performances yet at Coachella. Reflecting on the experience of performing live, she notes, “It’s a very, very, very spiritual and electric feeling, but not one that any other drug or high can give you really; it’s a natural high.”

Below, Young discusses the whirlwind of the past few months since “Messy” went viral, what fans can expect from her Coachella set, her passion for music creation, the importance of authenticity, and her aspirations for the future.

**What made you first want to pursue a career in music?**

I’ve always wanted to do music; it was never really a choice. I didn’t have any other career aspirations, so what started as a hobby—something I was passionate about—eventually became my job. I didn’t realize at first that I could make a living from it, but once I did, it felt like a bonus.

**You released “Messy” nearly a year ago, but it really took off on TikTok at the end of last year. What was your reaction to that?**

It was amazing but a bit surreal. The song has become a focal point in conversations about my career, and it feels monumental. Looking back, I know it will always be a significant part of my journey. I’m grateful it was this particular song that resonated so deeply because it feels true to me. It’s strange to have such a big hit as my only one so far; the overwhelming success creates a weird feeling.

**As an artist, what’s it like to see your music reach a broader audience through social media and streaming platforms after working on it for so long?**

Honestly, it doesn’t change me as a person, which is a comforting realization. The only difference is that I have a bigger song now. My next music will reflect my evolution as an artist. The real growth happens internally in the studio, with a small group of people. The key to creating great music is that the success is just a byproduct of doing something good, so while I feel elated about the success, it’s not the reason I create.

**Are you happy that “Messy” was the song that went viral, and do you have another track you hope gets more attention?**

I’m not particularly focused on that, but I do love “Conceited” and I have a special connection to “You Noticed.” I wish I had recorded it a bit differently, maybe with higher vocals, but it’s still a meaningful song, and I believe it will find its moment.

**Looking back at your album, *This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway*, released last year, what does it represent to you?**

The meaning has evolved over time. Initially, it represented an unapologetic expression meant for me and not for anyone else. Now, it symbolizes my journey in music and the healing it provides, both for myself and, hopefully, for others.

**From the whirlwind of the last few months, is there anything you’ve taken away from it all?**

The biggest takeaway is that no matter how much success I experience, I remain the same person inside. If I could offer advice to someone starting out, I would say that success can be fleeting, but at the end of the day, you go home to yourself. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, but I’m already looking forward to what’s next.

**Can you talk about your experience performing at the BRIT Awards for the first time earlier this year?**

Honestly, it was stressful and nerve-wracking. For someone like me, it was a significant milestone, and I was incredibly nervous. I don’t remember much of the performance, but I think it went well, so I’m proud of that!

**You’re also set to perform at Coachella for the first time in April. What are you most looking forward to?**

I’m just excited to be there. Since I’ve never attended Coachella, I want to soak in the atmosphere, the sun, and the energy of the crowd. While I’m a bit nervous about my performance, I’m eager to see all the other artists and enjoy the shared experience.

**Can you tease what fans can expect from your set?**

It’s going to be raw and authentic. My performances are always unique, and I might even introduce some new material. This is my first Coachella, and I’m really excited about it!

**What goes through your mind when you’re performing live and hear the audience singing along with you?**

I try to disconnect a little because it can be quite overwhelming. I’ve witnessed my audience grow from 50 people to thousands, and festivals bring a mix of fans, which is different from my own shows. Hearing everyone sing “Messy” for the first time was surreal; it’s such a spiritual and electric feeling—a natural high that no drug can replicate.

**Do you have a favorite part of the music creation process, whether it’s songwriting, recording, making music videos, or performing?**

There’s nothing I dislike. Some aspects are challenging, like photo shoots since I’m not a model, but I’ve grown to enjoy them. My favorites are performing and recording; writing is probably my top passion. Each part of the process has its pros and cons, but writing is cathartic, while performing carries a unique pressure.

**Considering everything you’ve accomplished, is there a moment you’re most proud of in your career?**

I’d say personal milestones are what I cherish most. Performing at the BRITs, collaborating with Tyler, The Creator, and hanging out with SZA were incredible experiences, but my personal achievements mean even more to me.

**Whether to longtime fans or new listeners, what do you hope people take away from your music?**

I hope they feel seen and understood, and that they can relate to it in some way.

**What does your perfect day off look like?**

Probably taking my new ADHD meds and chatting on the phone with my friends (laughs).

**In today’s world, why is it important for you to express to your fans that it’s okay to be your authentic self, despite societal pressures?**

It’s essential to be yourself, but not in harmful ways. We should embrace who we are without shame, whether it’s about body image or other societal judgments. We need to focus on being kind and confident in who we are. Life is too short to worry about trivial matters.

**What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve overcome to reach where you are today?**

Simply not giving up. There were times I felt like everyone would drop me, including my label. I struggled with my identity and creativity but always believed in myself, regardless of external validation.

**If you could speak to younger Lola, what would you say?**

Prepare yourself for a lot of unexpected challenges, but know you will overcome them. Also, stop listening to toxic influences and focus on being true to yourself.

**Where do you hope to see yourself in five years?**

I envision having released four albums, maintaining a successful career, and having a dedicated fan base. I want to continue making music that I’m proud of and that resonates with others.

**If you had to describe what makes Lola Young, Lola Young, what would you say?**

I’d say messy. I hate saying that, but it fits. I’m unapologetic and have no time to care about trivialities (laughs). Yet, I also care deeply about what I do and the people I connect with.
