Lizzo’s Transformative Health Journey: Unveiling Her Insights on Weight Loss and Wellness

Lizzo has consistently championed body positivity and neutrality, particularly as her own body has undergone changes.
Since 2023, the singer has been vocal on social media and in interviews about what she refers to as her “weight release journey.” Mindful of the language she uses to avoid any potential harm to her young fans, the “Truth Hurts” artist emphasized that her primary goal has always been to enhance her mental health.
“Once I started working out for mental health, to have balanced mental health or endorphins, so that I don’t look at myself in the mirror and feel ashamed or disgusted, exercise has helped me shift my mind, not my body,” she shared in a May 2023 TikTok video. “My body is going to change; everyone’s bodies change. That’s life.”
In January 2025, Lizzo announced on Instagram that she had achieved her initial weight release goal and was ready to set a new one.
So how did Lizzo lose weight? Here’s a summary of what she has shared about her “weight release” journey.
She started her weight loss journey in 2023
During an April 2025 appearance on *On Purpose with Jay Shetty*, Lizzo explained that her “intentional weight release journey” had taken around a year and a half.
Early in her journey, Lizzo revealed on TikTok that while she had always enjoyed working out, she began to take the physically demanding aspects of her career more seriously.
“I think a lot of people see a fat person and immediately assume everything they’re doing is to be thin,” the singer noted in the clip. “I don’t ever want to be thin. Will my body fluctuate from this size? Yes, I’m accustomed to fluctuating based on the choices I make in my life.”
She’s denied using Ozempic
In a March 2024 interview, Lizzo clarified that she had been dieting, emphasizing that her approach was anything but a quick fix. She stated she had been “methodical” and was “losing weight very slowly.”
“My body has been changing very slowly, but I don’t think people were paying attention,” she mentioned during her podcast interview with Shetty. “I would show aspects like my workouts or what I eat in a day… But we have to remember, not everyone is privy to what you’re going through daily. So when I pop out on a red carpet or when a video suddenly goes viral and my body appears different, it seems like it happened overnight.”
She’s vocal about the ups and downs of weight loss
Lizzo has openly discussed how physical changes are simply part of her journey. She expressed that her understanding of body positivity has “evolved into body neutrality.”
“I’m not going to lie and say I love my body every day,” the singer admitted. “The bottom line is, the way you feel about your body changes every single day. There are days I adore my body, and others when I don’t feel entirely positive.”
She started pilates to “heal” her back
In a December 2023 TikTok, Lizzo revealed that she had taken up pilates to help “heal” her back. She also incorporates strength training, long walks, and jump rope into her routine. Although Lizzo enjoys varying her workouts, she makes it a point to move her body every day.
“I’m taking the time every day to put some love into my body,” she told *The New York Times*. “There is never a day when I regret taking a walk or doing some Pilates.”
She reached her health goal in January 2025
While many were setting new year’s resolutions, Lizzo celebrated the achievement of her own. In January 2025, the “About Damn Time” singer shared two mirror selfies on Instagram, showcasing screenshots from an app that confirmed she had met her weight goal.
“I did it,” she captioned the post. “Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my weight release goal. I haven’t seen this number since 2014! Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to. Time for new goals!”
The stats in her photos indicated that the star had lowered her body mass index by 10.5 and reduced her body fat by 16 percent.
She doesn’t use the term “weight loss”
Throughout her journey, Lizzo has been transparent about her intentional language regarding weight loss. Instead of using the phrase “weight loss,” she prefers “weight release” as a more holistic way to describe her health changes—a perspective shift inspired by her boyfriend, Myke Wright.
“My man, he’s so funny. He was the one that first brought this to my attention. Initially, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I lost five pounds,’ and he asked, ‘Where did it go?'” Lizzo recounted to Shetty. “It’s like, I don’t think I want to lose anything. I think I want to win. I think I want to gain.”
The singer further expressed her intent to speak carefully about her body, as she is conscious of how her journey might affect her younger fans.
“Even me releasing the weight has impacted people, and I take that seriously,” Lizzo concluded. “And because of that, I want to transform it into something that makes people feel comfortable and less afraid of it.”
