Daniel Radcliffe Says He Wrote a Letter to the New Harry Potter Actor in HBO’s Reboot

Daniel Radcliffe is passing the torch.

Radcliffe recently stopped by Good Morning America to promote his upcoming Broadway show, Every Brilliant Thing, where he shared that he reached out to child actor Dominic McLaughlin who is portraying Harry Potter in HBO‘s Harry Potter series, which is currently shooting and targeting a 2026 premiere.

“I know a few people working on the production, so I wrote to Dominic and I sent him a letter, and he sent me a very sweet note back,” Radcliffe revealed. “I do not want to be like a specter in the lives of these children at all. I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did. I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better one.’”

The Tony winner continued, “I just see those pictures of him and the other kids and I just want to hug them. They just seem so young. I just look at them and say, ‘Oh, it’s crazy I was doing that at that age.’ But it’s also incredibly sweet and I hope they’re having a great time.”

Radcliffe originated the role of Harry Potter in the Warner Bros. movie adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s novels from 2001-11. He’s gone on to star in many other films and TV shows since; however, he’s found his home at the theater. Last year, Radcliffe won his first Tony Award for best actor in a featured role in a musical for Merrily We Roll Along

Another franchise alum, Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the films, is currently reprising his character in Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Elsewhere in the interview, Radcliffe also responded to Felton, saying Radcliffe was an “inspiration” for him to make his Broadway debut.

“Tom’s older than me. He was always like the cool kid growing up. It’s crazy that he would think of me as an inspiration for anything, but like yeah, it’s very that’s really sweet,” The Lost City star said. “I would encourage anyone that wants to act and enjoys acting to do stage stuff, and so I’m super excited that he’s in this and that he’s doing Broadway and he’s doing the show.”

As for Radcliffe, he returns to the stage in a solo play, Every Brilliant Thing, which begins previews on Feb. 21, 2026, ahead of its opening night on March 12 at the Hudson Theatre.
