John Turturro’s Surprising Take on Fans Inking His Image on Their Bodies: “I Really Don’t Want to See That”

John Turturro has strong feelings about fans who choose to commemorate him with tattoos.

In an exclusive interview at the Severance For Your Consideration event and panel at Bell Works in New Jersey, which serves as the real-life inspiration for Lumon Industries, the 68-year-old actor shared his thoughts on the love he has received from fans since portraying Irving in the Apple TV+ series.

Reflecting on the impact of his now-famous line, “Yes, do it Seth!”, Turturro described how going viral on social media has introduced a “whole new thing” to his career.

“Years ago, people didn’t have social media, so they would say those lines to you on the street or they’d get tattoos of you,” he explained, noting that many fans have chosen to get ink in honor of his character from The Big Lebowski.

“A lot of people have tattoos of me on intimate parts of their body, and they sometimes want to show them to me, and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to look at that,’ you know what I mean?” he added with a laugh.

Despite knowing how popular Severance is online, Turturro admitted he prefers to stay away from social media.

“I’m not really on social media because I don’t want to read about myself, and I don’t want to be self-conscious. I like being free and oblivious,” he explained, though he expressed gratitude for the audience’s positive reception of him and his characters.

“You’re always appreciative when the audience responds because you do it for people,” he shared about his craft. “I do it for myself, but you hope that it will reach someone.”

Severance, created by Dan Erickson and executive produced by Ben Stiller, delves into the dark inner workings of Lumon Industries, a biotechnology corporation that mandates its employees to undergo a “severance” operation, which separates their consciousness to prevent their personal and professional lives from intertwining.

During the FYC event, Stiller mentioned that he does keep an eye on online discussions surrounding the series but doesn’t allow it to dictate the storyline.

“I will dip into how people react; usually, if they like it, that’s great,” he said. “And if they don’t like it, then I stop dipping in.”

He pointed out that the producers maintain a “clear idea of what we’re doing that is independent of that” and take fan theories with “a grain of salt.”

Alongside Turturro, the series features a talented cast that includes Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Tramell Tillman, Michael Chernus, and Christopher Walken.

Severance is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
