Josh Brolin and Julia Garner Race to Find Missing Children in Terrifying Weapons Trailer

Josh Brolin and Julia Garner are in the middle of a tormenting mystery in their new thriller Weapons.

On Tuesday, April 29, Warner Bros. debuted the full trailer for Brolin and Garner’s upcoming horror epic, from Barbarian director Zach Cregger.

“When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance,” reads an official synopsis for Weapons, which also stars Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan.

The new trailer opens on an elementary school along with a child’s voiceover narrating, “This is a true story that happened in my town. So this one Wednesday is like a normal day for the whole school, but today was different.”

“Every other class had all their kids, but Mrs. Gandy’s room was totally empty. And do you know why? Because the night before, at 2:17 in the morning, every kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs and into the dark,” the child continued. “And they never came back.”

The characters played by Brolin, 57, and Garner, 31, are then seen trying to unravel the mystery in the chilling footage, with Brolin’s character addressing a group of concerned parents, “I don’t understand at all. Why just her classroom? Why only hers?!”

An initial teaser for the movie released on April 21 showed children running out of homes in a suburban neighborhoods the middle of the night as Brolin’s character is heard discussing the situation with someone else.

“What do you see that I don’t?” he said in the teaser.

Director Cregger, 44, described Weapons as “a very twisty, turny movie” during an appearance at CinemaCon 2025 earlier in April as he displayed footage from the film.

“It’s a movie that unravels and reinvents itself as it goes,” he said during the presentation.

Weapons recently launched a related tie-in website titled maybrookmissing.net, which builds further mystery surrounding the movie’s plot as it touts a headline that reads “17 Local Children Leave Home Simultaneously at 2:17AM.”

“A chilling mystery has gripped the small town of Maybrook after 17 children voluntarily left their homes Wednesday morning. Authorities are baffled by the inexplicable disappearance, which has shaken the community to its core,” the website reads.

It continues, “Upon investigation, front door camera footage showed the children leaving their homes at 2:17am Wednesday morning without any signs of force. Since then, little information has surfaced, and the case continues to baffle investigators.”

In addition to short, unsettling video clips showing children running through the streets alone, the website contains a second article titled “Underground Prison Discovered in Rental Home” — a reference to Cregger’s 2022 surprise horror hit Barbarian, which starred Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long.

Weapons is in theaters Aug. 8.
