Kacey Musgraves Clarifies Whether or Not She’s Quit Weed: ‘More Power to Whatever Suits You’

  • Country music star Kacey Musgraves clarified that she still does smoke weed despite previous comments implying otherwise during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter
  • She previously said that the drug was “not for this chapter” of her life and sang about easing back on smoking on the title track to her 2024 album Deeper Well
  • Elsewhere in the new interview, Musgraves updated fans about the status of new music

Kacey Musgraves hasn’t totally given up weed and said that previous comments about her use of marijuana were taken out of context.

In March 2024, the country music star told The Cut that weed was “not for this chapter” of her life, adding that she might come back to it as “a 60-year-old lady with nothing to do and I’m just doing pottery all day, maybe.”

However, she recently told The Hollywood Reporter that she still smokes, just not quite the same as she did before.

“Um, I never said I don’t ever partake. I just don’t wake up and hit a gravity bong the size of my face anymore, which is what I did for a long time. But, hey, more power to whatever suits you,” Musgraves, 36, clarified.

Musgraves also addressed her use of weed on the title track of her 2024 album Deeper Well.

I used to wake and bake / Roll out of bed, hit the gravity bong that I made / And start the day / For a while, it got me by / Everything I did seemed better when I was high / I don’t know why,” she sings on the song.

On the chorus, she noted, “So I’m gettin’ rid of the habits that I feel / Are real good at wastin’ my time / No regrets, baby, I just think that maybe / It’s natural when things lose their shine / So other things can glow.

While speaking to The Cut in 2024, Musgraves did add that she did use psilocybin mushrooms in a “spiritual” way, explaining, “When used with intention, I think it’s a massive dose of compassion and reverence for nature, fellow humans, yourself.”

In June 2024, the Grammy winning artist recalled her first time smoking weed with fellow country star and iconic smoker Willie Nelson. She noted that the moment happened in 2014 on his tour bus with fellow musician Alison Krauss.

“He had us up on his bus for some coffee and smoke before he started his set,” she recollected in a post on Instagram. “We talked about all kinds of things… our light-up western suits, conspiracy theories, aliens, his early job of cuttin’ trees down in East Texas, the history of hemp growth in the United States, and old songs.”

That led to her asking about his song “Are You Sure,” which surprised Nelson and led to him performing the song.

He and Musgraves wound up recording a version of the song and filming an accompanying music video for her 2015 album Pageant Material.

“He’s wearing a western suit I picked out and obliging me with a tequila shot,” she said. “It’s a good thing there is visual record of this moment in my life – otherwise I wouldn’t believe that it wasn’t just some hazy, sparkly, pipe dream that never actually happened.”

Elsewhere in her conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Musgraves described her roots in country music as “a home base” and “truly where I’m sonically the most happy.”

But since the beginning, I’ve always had an exploratory foot out the door a little bit, allowing myself to infuse all these other genres that speak to me,” she added.

The outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ+ community also weighed in on her “so controversial” anthem “Follow Your Arrow,” which she released despite being told not to.

“‘Arrow’ was the last song I turned in for that record. It ended up tanking — it was banned by country radio. But I would never trade that for the love and the people it brought to my world,” she recalled. “I’m not going to present a watered-down version of myself to be accepted. I’ll f—ing shovel s— for a living at a horse barn, and I’ll be really happy. Or I’ll just be a songwriter. Anyway, it ended up working out. I wasn’t setting out to be some martyr or freaking rule breaker. I’m just doing my job as a songwriter.”

Fans will be happy to know that new music is on the way, with Musgraves promising that she’s “written a ton of songs already.”

“I’m not sure yet where it’s gonna end up. I’ve been feeling really good playing around with some more — I want to say traditional — but at the same time, there always has to be a modern edge there in some way. There has to be a balance between tradition and future,” she said about the sonics of the project.
