Kurt Russell Is Alive — but Perhaps Not Well — in Apple’s ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Season 2

Kurt Russell’s screen legacy continues in season two of Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Russell’s character, Army officer Lee Shaw, is alive — spoiler alert — and headed to King Kong’s Skull Island in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season two. The Legendary Television series premieres Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, Apple TV announced Thursday. Subsequent episodes will roll out each Friday until May 1, 2026.
Wyatt Russell, Kurt’s real-life son, plays the younger version of the same character. The series also stars Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett and Anders Holm.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season one tracked a pair of siblings looking to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters, and ultimately, to Shaw, who exists in flashback form in the 1950s (Wyatt) and the modern-day storyline 50 years later (Kurt). The two timelines have not crossed paths — yet.
Season two will pick up with the fate of Monarch — and the world — hanging in the balance. The dramatic saga reveals buried secrets that reunite our heroes (and villains) on Kong’s Skull Island, and a new, mysterious village where a mythical Titan rises from the sea, Apple’s synopsis reads. The ripple effects of the past make waves in the present day, blurring the bonds between family, friend and foe — all with the threat of a titan event on the horizon.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is executive produced by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, alongside showrunner Chris Black, Jen Roskind, Matt Shakman, Andrew Colville, Lawrence Trilling and Andrew Colville. Trilling directs four of season two’s 10 episodes; Colville wrote two of them. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., owner of the Godzilla character.
Apple TV has a multiseries deal with Legendary Entertainment, which will include multiple spinoff series based on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Legendary boasts a whole roster of monsters — this thing could go on forever.
