Liza Minnelli Memoir Lands at Magnolia Hill, Warner Bros. TV for Adaptation
Liza Minnelli is bringing her life story to both the page and, potentially, the TV screen.
Magnolia Hill Productions (Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings) has optioned a forthcoming memoir from the iconic entertainer for a television adaptation through Warner Bros. TV. The memoir, to be published by Grand Central Publishing in 2026, stems from 15 years of recorded conversations between Minnelli and her friend and long-time creative partner Michael Feinstein. Journalists and authors Josh Getlin and Heidi Evans are also collaborating on the book.
Magnolia Hill founder Sam Haskell — who was once Minnelli’s agent at William Morris — will shepherd the TV adaptation through development.
“I am beyond excited to work with Sam Haskell of Magnolia Hill Productions and Warner Bros. Television on bringing my story to life in this special way,” Minnelli said in a statement. “Sam has been a dear friend and an invaluable part of my professional life, and I couldn’t think of a more fitting collaborator for this incredibly personal project. I can’t wait to share my story with the world.”
The memoir will trace Minnelli’s career through highs and lows, offer her unique perspective on Hollywood history as the daughter of Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli and her struggles with substance use disorder and the impact it had on her life.
“I would not trust this story with anyone besides Sam. My belief was always ‘Tell it when I’m gone!,’” Minnelli’s statement continues. “[Substance use disorder] isn’t about willpower or strength. It’s about the wiring of our brains; it is about how genetics impact our lives and the lives of those we love; and it is now time to remove shame and stigma. I’m grateful to experience longevity by working on recovery every day of my life.”
Haskell added, “Liza’s story is one of the most extraordinary, inspiring, and unforgettable in entertainment history. It is an honor to have the opportunity to bring her incredible life to the screen, and I am thrilled to continue our long-standing friendship through this collaboration.”
Magnolia Hill’s other TV projects include the 2021’s The Waltons Homecoming and 2022’s A Waltons Thanksgiving and several TV movies inspired by Parton’s music and life.
