‘Ma’ Sequel in the Works at Blumhouse With Octavia Spencer Returning

Octavia Spencer is on board for more Ma.
Blumhouse announced that a sequel to the psychological horror thriller is in development at the company, revealing the news at it its business of fear event.
The 2019 feature earned $60 million at the box office and starred Spencer as Sue Ann, a lonely woman who befriends a group of teens, allowing them to use her basement for parties. But things take a sinister turn as she implements a series of strict rules for the kids hanging out at her house, including never allowing them upstairs.
According to Blumhouse, part of the appeal of Ma for the company is the number of memes inspired by the film, a sign that it’s had staying power in pop culture.
“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round,” said Jason Blum, Founder/CEO, Blumhouse.
There is no word on a filmmaker or writer for the sequel. Tate Taylor directed the original feature from a script by Scotty Landes.
Spencer won an Oscar for The Help and was nominated for Hidden Figures and The Shape of Water. She is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen.
