Mariah Carey Expresses Surprise and Cautious Optimism Over Rock Hall Nomination: ‘I Never Saw This Coming’

Mariah Carey has received a nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in a recent interview, she expressed her uncertainty about winning, stating that she doesn’t want to “get too excited about it.” The star was also nominated in 2024.
Carey is taking a grounded approach regarding her nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The music icon is set to discover her fate later this month—whether she’ll be inducted into this esteemed institution. She shared in a new interview that her nomination came as a surprise to her.
“That’s a huge honor. I don’t know if I’m going to win it, so I don’t want to get too excited about it,” she told the Associated Press. “So, I just want to say that, again, it’s a huge honor and I guess I didn’t expect it. I wasn’t really thinking about it. And here we are.”
At 56, Carey was nominated in 2024 but did not make the final cut. In February, it was revealed that she was nominated again, alongside notable artists like Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol, Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, OutKast, and Oasis.
“I don’t really know if genre matters,” she commented. “I feel like people are more open to all different genres, much more than they were, you know? But I feel like a rock star sometimes.”
Artists and bands become eligible for nomination 25 years after releasing their first commercial recording, and Carey’s debut was in 1990. The inductees for this year will be announced later this month, with the ceremony scheduled to take place in Los Angeles in the fall.
In the same interview, the singer of “We Belong Together” revealed her desire to release her long-lost ‘90s grunge album, mentioning that she already has “so many ideas” for music videos to accompany the project.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to pull it together by the summer, but maybe, maybe I’ll release a few songs from it,” she said.
She also hinted at the possibility of creating music with her 13-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, who joined her onstage during her Christmas Time tour last year.
“I would love to [put out an album with them],” she shared. “They just have a lot of their own things that they’re doing, and I don’t want to force them to do anything.”
Regarding new music, the star, whose last album of original songs was released in 2018, mentioned that she’s “not supposed to talk” about upcoming projects but is indeed working on “something new.”
Recently, Carey was honored with the Icon Award at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, where she took the opportunity to pay tribute to her mother, who passed away in August.
“On this Saint Patrick’s Day, I want to honor my mother Patricia Carey for giving me the gift of music,” she expressed.
“Thank you, iHeart, for this incredible honor. As a kid, I used to listen to my favorite artist on the radio and dream of being on the airwaves myself. Now, for those of you who may not know what airwaves are, think of it as the non-WiFi version of streaming, okay?” Carey added later in her speech. “Even now I still get excited when I hear one of my songs playing on the radio. It never stops being magical.”
