Mariska Hargitay Explores Her Mother’s Legacy in New HBO Documentary on Jayne Mansfield

Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay is stepping into the director’s role for the first time with a deeply personal subject: her mother, Jayne Mansfield.

HBO is set to launch Hargitay’s documentary My Mom Jayne in June. The film will chronicle her journey “as she seeks to know, understand, and embrace her mother for the first time,” as outlined in the documentary’s logline. “Through heartfelt interviews and a selection of previously unseen photographs and home videos, she confronts her mother’s public and private legacy and uncovers the layers and essence of who Jayne was, not only to her fans but to those who were nearest to her.”

Hargitay is the offspring of Mansfield, a celebrated actress and sex symbol of the 1950s and ‘60s, and actor and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay. Mansfield tragically passed away in a car accident in 1967 when Hargitay was just 3 years old; she was also involved in the crash but survived, along with two elder siblings.

“This film is a labor of love and yearning. It’s a quest for the mother I never knew, a merging of a part of myself I’d never acknowledged, and a reclamation of my mother’s narrative and my own truth,” Hargitay stated. “I’ve always believed there is strength in vulnerability, and the process of creating this film has affirmed that belief like never before.”

Hargitay not only produces but also directs My Mom Jayne; this marks her inaugural venture in directing a feature-length film, despite having directed several episodes of SVU. Trish Adlesic, who collaborated with Hargitay on HBO’s 2017 documentary I Am Evidence, is also a producer. Lauran Bromley serves as the executive producer.

Hargitay is represented by CAA, The Lede Company, and Grubman Shire.
