‘Meet the Parents 4’ Lands John Hamburg to Direct for Universal

It’s no lie that Universal is moving forward with a new Meet the Parents sequel.
John Hamburg (Me Time), who wrote the script for the forthcoming film, is in talks to direct the project that has original stars Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner set to return. Hamburg worked on the screenplay for the 2000 original and the two subsequent sequels. Plot details have not yet been shared.
Producers include De Niro and Jane Rosenthal for Tribeca Productions, Jay Roach for Delirious Media, Stiller and John Lesher for Red Hour Films, and Hamburg for Particular Pictures. Universal’s executive vp of production development Matt Reilly and director of production development Jacqueline Garrell are overseeing the project for the studio.
Directed by Roach, Meet the Parents focuses on a nurse (Stiller) having trouble winning over his girlfriend’s overbearing father (De Niro). The 2000 film surpassed $330 million at the global box office, and 2004’s sequel Meet the Fockers, which added Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand to the cast, was even bigger, collecting $522 million worldwide.
Roach helmed the first two movies, while Paul Weitz was in the director’s chair for 2010’s Little Fockers.
During a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hamburg was cagey when asked if another Meet the Parents sequel could happen.
“I will refrain from discussing that question, but I love everybody involved, and we all are still in touch, and I think that’s all I’m gonna say on that,” Hamburg said at the time.
Hamburg is represented by WME and Sloss Eckhouse.
Deadline was first to report on Hamburg directing the new movie.
