Meg Ryan Weighs in on “Impossible Tragedy” of Losing ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Director Rob Reiner

Meg Ryan, who starred opposite Billy Crystal in Rob Reiner’s beloved film When Harry Met Sally, has weighed in on the tragic murder or Reiner and wife Michele.
“Oh how we will miss this man,” Ryan shared on Instagram on Wednesday morning. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle, for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales and in laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
The veteran movie star then offered an optimistic take on their shocking murders. “I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan posted. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”
Ryan’s post comes on the heels of a joint statement issued Tuesday by Billy and Janice Crystal, Albert and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan and Robin Zweibel, Larry David and Ashley Underwood, Marc Shaiman and Lou Mirabal, Barry and Diana Levinson, and Ambassador James Costos and Michael Smith.
“Going to the movies in a dark theater filled with strangers having a common experience, laughing, crying, screaming in fear, or watching an intense drama unfold is still an unforgettable thrill. Tell us a story audiences demand of us. Absorbing all he had learned from his father Carl and his mentor Norman Lear, Rob Reiner not only was a great comic actor, he became a master story teller,” the statement read. “There is no other director who has his range. From comedy to drama to ‘mockumentary’ to documentary he was always at the top of his game. He charmed audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his films.”
Rob Reiner, who directed such beloved Hollywood classics as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me and When Harry Met Sally after starring in the trailblazing sitcom All in the Family, was found dead along with his wife, Michele, in their Brentwood home after “suffering lacerations consistent with a knife,” law enforcement sources confirmed. Said a spokesperson for the family: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Nick Reiner, the couple’s son, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. On Tuesday, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman added that there were potential sentencing enhancements accounting for special circumstances because there were multiple murders. Nick also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon — a knife, according to Hochman. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. He remains behind bars.
