Michael Patrick King to be Honored With Visibility Award at Human Rights Campaign Gala

Michael Patrick King has a date with Human Rights Campaign.

The veteran creator will be feted at the organization’s Los Angeles dinner at Fairmont Century Plaza on March 28. King has been selected to receive HRC’s Visibility Award for “his work uplifting LGBTQ+ stories on screen and bringing visibility for the LGBTQ+ community in the entertainment world” as he’s done throughout his career on many high-profile projects. The shine for King comes as he’s readying an anticipated new season of the Lisa Kudrow-starrer The Comeback for HBO Max in March.

“The inclusion of LGBTQ+ narratives is integral for meaningful storytelling. Our stories are an undeniable part of the human experience and they deserve to be told in every medium,” offered King in a statement. “As our community faces attempts to exclude us on and off screen, it is important that we continue to unapologetically make our voices heard. I’m thrilled to have my accomplishments recognized and to be joined in this work by advocates from Los Angeles and beyond.”

Added HRC president Kelley Robinson: “Michael Patrick King is an undeniable talent whose work has brought so much joy, laughter and heart to our community. Throughout his career, King has helped to expand our visibility, advance our representation and amplify our voices — exemplifying the power of LGBTQ+ storytelling and the depth of our contributions to the entertainment world.”

King began his television writing career on the beloved CBS sitcom Murphy Brown. He followed it up with a brief stint as a writer and executive producer on the sitcom Cybil before moving on to create original TV pilots with stars like Don Johnson, Ellen Barkin, Debi Mazar, Joanna Gleason, Seth Green, Bridget Everett and Loni Anderson. The Johnson-starrer, A Mann’s World, featured five LGBTQ+ series regular characters.

King teamed with Darren Starr on HBO’s Sex And The City, which became a pop culture phenomenon. He has written, executive produced and directed on the show across its entire run in addition to writing and directing both big screen features. His other credits include 2 Broke Girls, AJ and the Queen, And Just Like That and more.

He has enjoyed a long partnership with Kudrow on The Comeback, which became a cult classic after it was canceled following its first season in 2005. It was renewed nearly decade later and has since been renewed again for a third and final season that debuts in March.
