Michael Wolff Reveals Trump’s Team Considered Don Jr.’s Outdoor Show to Win Over the White House

In a recent article for New York magazine, Michael Wolff revealed an intriguing suggestion that a representative from Warner Bros. Discovery received from within “the Trump orbit.” The proposal was that if the company wished to gain favor with the administration, it might consider giving Donald Trump Jr. “a hunting and fishing show” on the Discovery Channel. The insider pointed to a lucrative Amazon deal for a documentary featuring First Lady Melania Trump as an example of how to “advantageously interact with the White House.”
The implications of this suggestion were detailed in the penultimate paragraph of a comprehensive profile on Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
“WBD confirmed that a company representative recently reached out to the Trump orbit seeking advice about how the company might interact favorably with the White House and improve its Trump-era reputation,” Wolff wrote. “The reported message suggested looking at the example of Amazon and Jeff Bezos paying Melania Trump $40 million to participate in a documentary about herself. They were told that Don Jr. might enjoy a hunting and fishing show on the Discovery Channel.”
In response to an inquiry, the White House sent back a scathing remark: “Michael Wolff is a lying sack of sh*t and has been proven to be a fraud. He routinely fabricates stories originating from his sick and warped imagination, only possible because he has a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain.” This statement came from Steven Cheung, the White House Communications Director, and has been reiterated to various media outlets discussing Wolff.
The inquiry also reached out to Warner Bros. Discovery for comment, but no response was received.
Although Zaslav is a Democrat, he may need the approval of Trump’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for any future mergers, especially if they resemble the significant 2021 merger of Discovery, Inc. and AT&T’s WarnerMedia. WBD has begun steps to separate its cable channels from its streaming platforms (primarily Max) and studio operations. Meanwhile, NBCUniversal is progressing with a similar strategy involving its temporarily named SpinCo. Speculation exists that the NBCU cable channels headed for SpinCo. could potentially merge with the Discovery portfolio of networks.
The formation of Warner Bros. Discovery brought CNN under Zaslav’s leadership, leading to tension between him and Trump, who won the presidency in 2016 and 2024 but lost in 2020. Zaslav has referred to CNN as a “crown jewel” of the mega-company he now oversees, but the cable news network has consistently been one of Trump’s primary adversaries in the media landscape.
