Michelle Obama is “so glad” she didn’t end up having a son for one reason in particular.

During the Wednesday, June 18 episode of her IMO podcast while joined by her cohost and brother Craig Robinson, the former first lady, 61, caught up with radio giant Angie Martinez in a conversation that extended to the challenges that come with raising young men.

At one point, Martinez told Obama that she “should’ve [thrown] a boy in the mix,” referring to her family with her husband Barack Obama and adult daughters Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24.

“I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy. Because he would’ve been a Barack Obama,” Michelle joked, as Martinez insisted: “Baby Barack, it would’ve been amazing.”

“No, I would’ve felt for him,” Michelle responded.

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama speaks on the second day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, on August 20, 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept the party's nomination for president at the DNC which runs from August 19-22 in Chicago.

After Robinson clarified that Michelle “borrowed our boys” — referring to his own children — the former first lady agreed and confirmed that she’s “got plenty.”

Elsewhere during Robinson and Michelle’s latest episode, the pair spoke with Martinez about the work that comes with raising boys in today’s climate.

“People say mothers raise their girls and love their sons. And I say, love your son but raise them, too,” Michelle said. “Raise him to be as strong as you know he’s going to have to be. Teach him how to deal with the traffic stop but also teach him how to communicate in a marriage and be a listening father and to be a compassionate neighbor and be a voting citizen. Somebody who’s gonna pay attention and care about something outside of himself.”

“And if you’re thinking about that human, then all these choices become a little more clear about what he needs as a grown man in the world,” she added.

Michelle’s comments come days after she shared Father’s Day wishes to Barack alongside a throwback Instagram snap, showing the couple smiling alongside their two daughters.

“I love looking back at photos like this of when our girls were younger. @BarackObama has always been there for us no matter what — even when it felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders,” she captioned the image.

“We’ve always been so grateful. To Barack and all the dads and father-figures celebrating today, Happy Father’s Day! ❤️” Michelle concluded.
