Michelle Williams and Michelle Williams ‘Finally’ Meet for the First Time at Broadway’s Death Becomes Her

History was made on Thursday, April 17, when two icons came together for the first time.

It happened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City, after a performance of the hit Broadway musical Death Becomes Her as singer Michelle Williams — who stars in the musical adaptation of the 1992 dark comedy — met none other than her namesake, actress Michelle Williams.

A photo of the pair posing side-by-side for the first time was captured backstage. They also created a funny video together, which Death Becomes Her and Williams both shared to their official Instagram accounts.

“Finally,” the songstress captioned a clip, filmed from her dressing room as she pretended to sign autographs on pictures of the five-time Oscar nominee.

She then made the reveal, panning the camera over to the other Williams. “Who should I make it out to?” the actress asked, as Williams joked, “Would you make them out to meeeee?”

The pair both rose to fame in the 1990s, Williams, 45, as a member of Destiny’s Child and Williams, 44, as the star of Dawson’s Creek.

For decades, audiences have confused the two for one another — a line that’s gotten all the more blurry as the Grammy winner launched her acting career and the Emmy winner began singing in multiple projects, including her turn as Sally Bowles in the 2014 Broadway revival of Cabaret.

In fact, just last month, Williams shared a video from her Death Becomes Her dressing room in which she read a letter from a mixed-up fan.

“‘Dear Michelle Williams, I hope this letter finds you in great spirits,’ ” she said, reading the letter in a clip posted March 11. “‘My name is Philip, and I have been an avid fan of your incredible performances in both film and theater.’ ”

Though it felt like Philip might be talking about that Williams — who, besides Death Becomes Her, has treaded the boards in Aida, Once on the Island and Chicago, as well as appeared on screen, like in the 2021 TV movie Christmas in Harmony — is quickly became clear he was mistaken.

“‘Your work in movies like Blue Valentine, Manchester by the Sea or The Greatest Showman has deeply moved me and many others, showcasing your exceptional talent,’ ” the letter continued. “‘I am writing to kindly ask if you would consider signing the enclosed photos I have of you. Having your autograph would mean so much for me and my daughter, as we admire your artistry.’ ”

Williams finished the letter, filled with compliments about Death Becomes Her, and then held up photos of the other Williams, which Philip had sent.

“Philip, thank you so much. Thank you, Philip. Thank you so much. Absolutely brilliant. Her hair is fabulous.”

Death Becomes Her opened in November 2024 to rave reviews. In addition to Williams, the musical also stars Megan Hilty, Jennifer Simard, Christopher Sieber and Josh Lamon in principal roles. Direction comes from Christopher Gattelli.

Earlier on Thursday, cast members including Hilty and Simard gathered at Vers in Hell’s Kitchen alongside Gattelli and Death Becomes Her‘s composers Julia Mattison and Noel Carey for a special invite-only bash to celebrate the digital release of the musical’s official cast album (out now via Concord Theatricals Recordings). Pre-orders for a physical CD and two-LP vinyl release are now available too.

The musical is one of the offerings of the 2024-2025 season that’s eligible for the coveted Best New Musical trophy at the 2025 Tony Awards. Nominations for the honors, theater’s highest trophy at the “T” in EGOT, are announced May 1.
