- The video has made many other moms feel less alone in their own gripes with motherhood.
Being a stay-at-home mom of three is no easy feat. Add in the pressure of social media and a passion for creative expression, and it becomes even more challenging.
For one mom, though, the chaos of parenthood turned into the inspiration for a viral TikTok video that resonated with countless parents across the platform.
Hailey Osborne’s Disney-inspired parody song about the realities of parenthood struck a chord, proving that even in the midst of the mess, there is plenty of room for laughter and creativity.
Osborne’s idea for the video sprouted naturally one day while watching and singing along to The Little Mermaid with her children.
“Disney is obviously in the house all the time, and really it was me singing it out loud,” Osborne tells PEOPLE exclusively. “My kids were playing, singing it out loud, and then my mind was just kind of thinking, like, ‘Haha. Actually, I kind of do have these thoughts and feelings, just in a little different way.’ ”
The lyrics of her viral song touched on some of the most relatable aspects of parenthood: the constant laundry, dishwashing, meal planning and most importantly, the lack of sleep.
“It’s just the reality of the season of life I’m in as a mom,” Osborne explains. “I stay home with my kids full time. I also do some schooling with them, so I am home a lot.”
The mother of three says the responsibilities often feel endless. “I think that is just a very not glamorous part of motherhood that no one talks about. Everyone’s talking about the new milestone their kid’s reaching… but we all know we have laundry piled up in another room. We all know that we have dishes to do tonight,” Osborne admits.
Her song didn’t just capture the common frustrations of being a stay-at-home parent – it also highlighted a deeper emotional connection. One memorable part of the song features a line about wanting to be “where the grown-ups are” – something many on TikTok resonated deeply with.
“There are times when I’m like, oh my gosh, I just want to have a full conversation with a grown-up without having to explain what that means,” she shares.
Osborne also highlights the unspoken pressures of trying to maintain a “perfect” home while raising children. She notes that every mother’s journey is unique — some moms work, others stay home — and there’s a wide range of what it means to be a mother. “We’re all actually [working] this out together,” Osborne says.
Luckily, reactions from her friends and family have been overwhelmingly positive. “They all love it,” Osborne reveals, especially her mother, who was also a stay-at-home mom.
“There’s something in her mind about her daughter singing about the life she lived, that she’s like, ‘Whoa. How did I get here? My daughter is now talking about all the things that I was going through when I was raising her,’ ” Osborne says.
The response from her wider audience has also been heartwarming. “My favorite thing that happens between my platforms is the conversations that start in the comments between the moms,” Osborne tells PEOPLE.
“Especially the women that are out of that season who have adult children… You have a mom with a 2-year-old talking to a mom with a 21-year-old,” she continues. These conversations show the power of social media in building communities, and in this case, helping mothers feel less alone in their experiences.
Despite the viral success, balancing creativity with parenthood remains a delicate act. “Staying off my phone — it changes everything,” she revealed. “Before all of this blew up, I went without a phone for six months to see what would happen. And it changed my mental health. It changed the way I parent.”
For Osborne, keeping boundaries with technology is essential to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “I post my video in the morning. I leave my phone upstairs. I go downstairs. Work is done,” she says.
By disconnecting, Osborne highlights the importance of putting her kids first. “Motherhood for me always has to come first, because this is their childhood. This is their life,” she explains. “Sure, it’s my life too, but this is a very small season out of my whole life that they need the attention, and so I try my very best to make sure that I’m ‘mom’ to them.”
Having a strong support system is also key to managing the competing demands of parenthood and content creation. “When my husband’s off work, he can hang out with the kids. He can entertain them. They can go play outside. I can film when I need to get that done,” Osborne shares.
When it comes to staying inspired in the chaos of raising young children, this mom finds creativity in unexpected places. “I try to do things outside of that creativity,” she explains.
So whether it’s sewing, crocheting, or just finding something new to try, Osborne suggests staying present and letting inspiration flow from real-life moments.
In finding balance between the demands of parenting and her passion for creativity, Osborne reminds others that it’s okay to laugh at the mess, embrace the chaos, and find beauty in the process. Through her videos, she continues to build a community of parents who share these same experiences, offering them a much-needed reminder that they’re not alone.
