Neil Patrick Harris Credits Husband David Burtka’s ‘Incredible Taste’ in New Cocktail and Mocktail Book — See the Cover! (Exclusive)

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are doling out the paired drink recipes — for both the drinkers and non-drinkers alike.
The duo will be releasing Both Sides of the Glass: Paired Cocktails and Mocktails to Toast Any Taste on September 30, 2025, PEOPLE can exclusively confirm as well as reveal the cover of the new book.
The book comes out of the desire for the couple to share both tasty, alcoholic libations that Harris enjoys while also making sure that Burtka, who is eight years sober, doesn’t feel like he has to miss out on any of those special moments raising a glass.
“I’ve always loved the process of mixology. In fact, one of David’s birthday presents for me one year was lessons with a mixologist in New York who taught me about the different types of alcohols and what to pair with them. And so it’s always been fun in an alchemy way for me to mix drinks,” Harris tells PEOPLE exclusively.
He continued, “David, however, is not an alcohol drinker, and so we wanted to, we thought that there was a good opportunity to be able to educate people about the spirit free cocktail world without it having to be an either-or situation.”
The book will feature 70 recipes — 35 cocktails and paired mocktails, respectively — that will be themed and organized around the four elements of fire, earth, water and air.
“I’m eight years sober, so I got really annoyed with every time that I’d go to a party or even a bar and the only options for me were sparkling water with lime, or sodas, or really sugary mocktails. And I don’t do the real sugary mocktails,” Burtka explained of the need to create tasty, yet elevated mocktails that were inspired through the couple’s travels, especially in Europe. “[Europeans] do a really nice mocktail, for sure, they really use a lot of teas and different kinds of infusions, which I had fun creating in the book.”
Burtka, who is a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, told PEOPLE he enjoyed playing with his knowledge of different flavor profiles and found it helpful knowing “how to mix what with what” from his years in the kitchen.
“[David] studied with some of the greats, so he’s able to recognize and reference very subtle and nuanced flavors,” Harris says of his husband. “I think one of my favorite things about David is his ability to be flavor-forward. He has, well, I will say it succinctly — he has impeccable taste.”
Standout recipe pairings in Both Sides of the Glass include The Bitter Manhattan/Dirty Man(hattan), Hard Watermelon Limeade/Watermelon Lemonade, Penicillin/Antibiotic and The Perfect Margarita/Kinda Marg.
The couple, who have been married for over 10 years, hopes that the book will bring both the drinkers and non-drinkers together, making every sip feel like a special occasion.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about laughter for me, I do feel like we do have fun,” Burtka says of working alongside his husband on the book. “We do have fun laughing through the projects we do.”
Both Sides of the Glass is out Tuesday, Sept. 30, and is available for preorder now, wherever books are sold.
