Netflix’s spy thriller Black Doves is adding several new faces as it begins filming its second season.
Neve Campbell, Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley, Sylvia Hoeks, Goran Kostic and Samuel Barnett have joined the series, which stars Keira Knightley as an operative for the spy organization of the title. Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire will also reprise their lead roles in season two; Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Agnes O’Casey and Molly Chesworth are also returning.
“I couldn’t be more excited to delve back into the world of our murderous little spy family,” Black Doves creator, writer and executive producer Joe Barton said in a statement. “To have so many of our amazing cast returning and also being able to add some of my absolute favourite actors into the mix is such a great joy. Downing Street will never be the same again.”
Production on season two has begun in and around London; a premiere date hasn’t been set. In season two, per Netflix’s description, “Helen (Knightley) is still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organisation she serves: the Black Doves. But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband, Wallace (Buchan), preparing to become Prime Minister, she is walking a more treacherous line than ever. As Helen’s enigmatic handler Mrs. Reed (Lancashire) is ensnared in a ruthless plot to undermine her position in the Black Doves, Helen is reunited with her best friend Sam (Whishaw). The once high-end triggerman is now reduced to lonely drinks in Soho bars and low-rate hits. As they search for answers, loyalties are weaponized, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything.”
Mod (One Day) will play Laila, an “acerbic and anarchic” Black Doves agent sent to assist Helen. Ceesay, coming off FX’s Alien: Earth, plays Mr. Conteh, a Black Doves executive. Riley will play Patrick, who works for a mysterious outfit and offers Sam a lifeline. Details on the other actors’ roles are being kept under wraps, aside from character names: Campbell (the Scream franchise, The Lincoln Lawyer) plays Cecile Mason; Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) plays Katia Chernov; Kostic (Ant-Man and the Wasp) plays Alexi Chernov; and Barnett (Lee) plays Jerry.
Barton executive produces Black Doves via his Noisy Bear company. Jane Featherstone and Chris Fry of Sister and Knightley also exec produce. Callum Devrell-Cameron is series producer. Julian Farino and Kieron Hawkes will direct in season two.
