New Godzilla Movie in the Works From ‘Godzilla Minus One’ Director Takashi Yamazaki

Good news, kaiju fans: Godzilla will be stomping back into cinemas soon, courtesy of the director behind last year’s Oscar-winning smash hit, Godzilla Minus One.

Legendary Japanese studio Toho, creator of Godzilla and studio home of Akira Kurosawa, revealed Friday that Takashi Yamazaki has signed on to helm the next film in the long-running franchise. The filmmaker famously wrote, directed and oversaw all of the VFX in Godzilla Minus One, and he’s set to reprise all of those responsibilities on the new title.

Toho posted a video on X of Yamazaki cheerfully announcing the upcoming project.

“Hello everyone, I have wonderful news,” the director says. “I’ll be directing the new Godzilla movie. Please stay tuned.”

It’s unclear whether the next Godzilla movie will be a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One or a new standalone film. Godzilla is famously the oldest-running movie franchise in the world, with the first film released in 1954 and 36 movies featuring the monster following it.

Godzilla Minus One, which had a budget of just $15 million, was considered a marvel of bang-for-buck VFX. The film earned $116 million worldwide, the most ever for a live-action Japanese film.
