Orlando Bloom Reflects on His Surreal Journey Joining the Lord of the Rings Cast

The Lord of the Rings franchise centered around the adventure, and for actor Orlando Bloom, the filming itself was an expedition as well.

“For me, as a young performer, I recall sitting there fresh out of drama school with all these legends,” Bloom, 48, expressed during a Lord of the Rings panel at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., on April 6. “And thinking, ‘What am I doing here? How did this happen? This is incredible.'”

“It was a sensation of excitement,” he continued, reminiscing about the filming of the first movie, released in 2001. “I mean, I was 20. We’d read the books and had some understanding of what this could potentially be, but not truly knowing anything as it was my first filmmaking experience. I was just like an open vessel, and it’s about that kind of anticipation, that thrill, that sense of possibility, that feeling that your entire life is starting and you’re embarking on this extraordinary journey. If I could bottle that sensation and share it with you all… I think we also could never have anticipated — I don’t think any of us really understood what we were stepping into.”

At the panel, Bloom — who portrayed the elf Legolas in the films — was accompanied by co-stars Liv Tyler, Sean Astin, and Jonathan Rhys-Davies.

Tyler, 47, concurred that “the entire experience was so exhilarating and daunting just to be a part of the whole universe, the vastness of the material. I felt so much responsibility, and I still do. I get anxious when I discuss it. There was just so much we had to learn.”

Her character, the half-elven Arwen, she reflected, “is a beautiful character who’s somewhat mysterious because there’s not as much of her in the books. So we were figuring out how to translate that into the films and develop her story, which evolved over the years. I suppose I’m still in awe and inspired by her today,” she stated. “We were so young. It was challenging to fully comprehend everything as it unfolded.”

With that, Rhys-Davies, 80, interjected, “And yet, it was not apparent, even now, that you had, as you mentioned, a certain sense of fear. The woman, the fierce character she portrays, so beautiful, so confident, one would never imagine it was a young actress who was …”

“Scared to ride a horse?” Tyler interjected. “I was very intimidated by riding a horse.”

“You didn’t see it,” Rhys-Davies, who played the dwarf warrior Gimli, replied.

Astin remarked that Tyler also brought a different energy to the set.

“When Liv first arrived, we all had dinner. Remember, it had just been the boys for months, lots of locker room talk for months,” the 54-year-old, who portrayed hobbit Samwise Gamgee, reminisced. “And then Liv was coming for dinner, and we were all, ‘I’ll sit next to her, no I’ll sit next to her!'”
