Pablo Larraín’s ‘Maria’ Teaser Sees Angelina Jolie as Legendary but Troubled Opera Singer
Angelina Jolie goes through all the emotions in the first teaser trailer for Maria, which sees the actress portray the legendary but troubled opera singer Maria Callas.
The film, directed by Pablo Larraín (Jackie and Spencer), follows the “American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. Maria reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life,” the logline reads.
“What do you want to sing,” a voice says, as Jolie responds at the end of the video, “Not today.” The teaser also features glimpses of Callas’ final days in 1970s Paris, from personal moments to her performing onstage.
Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Haluk Bilginer round out the cast. The film was produced by Larraín, Juan De Dios Larraín, Jonas Dornbach and Lorenzo Mieli.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief film critic David Rooney wrote in his review, following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, “The movie aims to depict a celebrated woman, whose life has been as much about sacrifice as reward, seeking to take control, to look back and see the truth as death approaches. But its moments of illumination are hazy. There’s little that comes close to the compassion and insight Larraín brought to his portraits of Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana, even though it’s very much of a piece with those movies.”
Maria starts playing in select theaters in the U.S. on Nov. 27 and on Netflix Dec. 11.
