Prince William is wishing a very special — and iconic — friend a happy birthday as he turns 99.
On Thursday, May 8, the royal, 42, praised conservationist and TV documentary maker Sir David Attenborough for his dedication to raising awareness of the fragile natural world in a personal tribute on Instagram.
Attenborough, who has made ground-breaking films about the wonders of the natural world over seven decades, is also a member of the prize council of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize, which is working to find solutions to the environmental damage the planet has endured.

His latest film — called Ocean with David Attenborough — premiered earlier this week, with longtime environmental champion King Charles showing support.
The Prince of Wales’ tribute read, “As he turns 99 today, in his new film, Sir David has once again reminded us of the need to protect natural habitats — this time those beneath the ocean. He has dedicated his life to ensuring we understand the realities of what mankind is doing to the planet.”
“However hard hitting his message is, Sir David always leaves us with a sense of hope and optimism that all is not lost and this film is no different,” he continued, writing, “We must act together, with urgency, to restore our oceans.”
Prince William signed off with a simple “W,” underlining this was a personal message.

Attenborough, who was close to Prince William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth, has appeal across the generations, which was underlined when he spent some time with Kate Middleton and William’s children — Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7 — in 2020.
